BATTLESTAR GALACTICA QUESTION? |
|
Does John McCain remind you of Colonel Saul Tigh from the new series...i'm thinking the parallels are downright eerie, especially if you factor in he was a POW in the 3rd season.

3. No, not really. I think Tigh is a more complex and pained person, |
|
a real old-school kind of guy trying to find his way through the pain and sadness into a new world that he doesn't really understand.
Have you watched all of Season 3? I won't spoil anything, but there are some other moments of learning through the series that make him not like McCain.

5. I agree. Tigh is a much more complex and ultimately simpatico character than |
|
Bush junta-climbing McCain. Tigh repeatedly and sincerely states he never wanted command, never wanted power, and is thrown into situations time and again in which his poor opinion of himself--and of course his alcoholism--are factors in events. The basic situation of Battlestar Galactic--that these are the last 50,000 or so human beings--means that everyone is faced with unusual demands upon their character and skills. The last standing living of the president's cabinet--after the Cylon attack--for instance, is the Secretary of Education, who is sworn in as president, and rises to the task. And poor Tigh is a used up, alcoholic, old military man, whose chief virtue is his utter loyalty to Commander Obama, the person who saved his life and brought him back into the military. His set-to's with the rebellious pilot Starbuck (a really remarkable character) show him to be ever on the edge of self-knowledge, but always falling back on previous coping methods (lying to himself, drinking). She call him on his shit, and you can tell that he knows that she's a truth-teller--but then he retreats, and tries to buck himself up.
McCain is just nakedly ambitious for power. I don't see a comparison to Col. Tigh. McCain is more of a Cylon, actually.

6. Yeah, I have all the seasons... |
|
You're right, well maybe Tigh is the way McCain should be...introspective when he screws up. Too bad the real life McCain is such a disappointment.

that is definitely one major way in which Tigh is not like McCain.
Although McCain was alive when All Along the Watchtower was written. :-)
I... oh, my God, I had just the thought - what if Tigh is a McCain ghola? What if humanity, before it got to the level of Battlestar Galactica, went through the tens of thousands of years long period that's chronicled in Dune?
Wouldn't that be a kicker.
Battlestar Galactica as post-Dune human narrative...
