What policy initiatives have the Democrats promoted this calendar year? |
|
Life's been pretty hectic, so I haven't been following the news too closely beyond the headline stuff.
Have the Democrats in DC been doing anything in the last few months?
With the election in November, shouldn't they be providing and publicizing examples of why they're better stewards of state than the Republicans?

Jim Webb promoted a variety of bills to cut troop deployments, increase R&R, and increase college funding for when the troops got back (21st century GI bill). The Republicans filibustered all of them, and even if they got a vote W would just veto them. The dems also tried to pass a bill to help families in forclosure, but that got filibustered too (I still cannot figure out why any informed person who isn't dogmatically partisan can vote GOP in 2008. Who votes for a party that cuts education benefits for the troops and helping working families avoid forclosure?)
Siegelman is supposed to appear in the house soon, so that is good.
Dems are trying to pass mental health parity
Although the stimulus package was a mistake (most people will just save the money or pay off old bills) the dems talked the GOP into making it more mainstream. I think the GOP wanted a stimulus package that went mainly to large businesses and the wealthy, and the dems pushed for one that would go to working and middle class families.

And that has been a full-time oversight burden. Too bad they have such opposition from the Junta!
What do you expect, a lot of progressive bills vetoed?
