Siegelman home after nine months in prison

Posted by Birmingham News March 28, 2008 10:01 PM
Former Gov. Don Siegelman arrived home in Birmingham tonight after serving nine months in a federal prison.

"While I lost my freedom, I never lost my faith," a gaunt Siegelman told reporters in a press conference before heading home with his wife, two children and brother. "I got up each morning and thanked God for the many blessings I have," he said.

He repeatedly thanked God for not just his release from federal prison, but for the support of family, friends and political allies on the House Judiciary Committee, specifically mentioning Chairman John Conyers, D-Michigan, and Democrat Artur Davis of Birmingham for seeing what Siegelman termed the injustices in the case against him.

About 15 reporters waited most of the evening for Siegelman's arrival. They first gathered outside his Vestavia Hills home. But neighbors were unhappy with the commotion, then word came from the Siegelman camp that he would meet with the press at the Boy Scouts of America center nearby.
