Me? Just a lima-bean powered perpetual motion machine. |
|
When you have two hands and one foot on a shovel there's plenty of time to think. This morning I finished up rediggin the rows of my garden. The garden is made up of 3 raised beds and I like to fluff them up once every couple of years. While I was pushing the shovel it occurred to me that this was a lima-bean powered world, or at least my little part of it was. Last year I grew Lima-beans on this spot. They did well, which was good because I love Lima-beans. Last night we passed on dinner because my wife wasn't feeling well. Later in the evening, being hungry, I cooked up a large pot of lima-beans and ate 'em up. They were wonderful.
So this morning I'm out there digging away in the garden and it occurred to me that all of the energy I was using to dig was supplied by those lima- beans from last night, which grew in the very soil I was now digging, and into which I will be planting more lima-beans, which I will eat to supply the energy necessary to prepare next year's soil for more lima-beans. And there you have it folks, I am as close to a perpetual motion machine as god ever created.
Eat locally-grown folks, its better for you, its better for the planet.

so I can do the same. I don't think we have a long enough season for lima beans, but I always grow those purple bush beans that do great in my garden and taste so good. I love my vegetable garden so much.

It's all rocks where I live but I'm going to grow some beans in buckets this year. When I have some dirt I will make a raised bed garden too.

4. We tend to be more.... |

....blackeyed pea- and pinto bean-powered in this part of the world, I guess. And home-grown tomatoes.
I agree with you--lots of benefits to eating local. It's a strategy we may all need to adopt sooner rather than later, given the way things seem to be going!
And as our Australian friends would say: good on ya!

With the possible exception of steamed blue crabs.
