Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA"

You know - "and I'm proud to be an American where at least I know I'm free..."

I HATED this song from the first time. Not so much the infantile jingoistic lyrics, but the AWFUL headachemaking melody.

And much to my chagrin, it seems to have become a redneck national anthem of sorts.

I Love "America the Beautiful".

I like "My Country 'tis of thee"

I even kinda like "The Star-Spangled Banner".

"God Bless America" is awfully corny and dated and not my cup of tea.

But that Lee Greenwood song is a horrible POS, IMO.

Are there any libs that like it?

And are there any righties that hate it?

(Actually, I must confess I was in my Limbaugh-listening, repug voting phase when I first heard it. But I still hated it...)

1. The absolute BEST version of the star-spangled banner was the one done by Jimi Hendrix.
I can't stand ANY of that "new country" crap, even without the cheap truck ad jingoism.

5. Wait, eighties country is "new country"?
I, too, hate "new country" but I wouldn't include eighties county like Lee Greenwood's "Proud to be an Amiercan" in that category. It's icky, but it's not very new.

12. Sorry, maybe I had it confused with that "we'll put a boot in yer ass" song.
I know they both started getting overplayed in public spaces after 9-11. I didn't realize it was that old.

3. I agree..If you took all the corn-ball, amateurish, simplistic, self-serving parts of Song Writing.
..and stuck it in a bowl, stired it up...baked it @ 350 for 2 hours, You wind up with "God bless the USA"

4. I'm a leftie and I hate it. But then I'm not a country fan (except maybe Patsy Cline).
I confess to getting teary eyed sometimes during the SSB but America the Beautiful should be the National Anthem. (Less militaristic and easier to sing but therefore less dramatic. You can't beat starting out with a drum roll.) Even though it mentions God. And says HIS grace. Never mind. How about This Land is My Land?

6. The word cheesy comes to mind when I hear that.
Sounds like a junior high student wrote it. I don't know if I really like any of the standard patriotic songs, all though Styx's Suite Madam Blue was good.

7. It would be a fine song if it were done with a slow, acoustic arrangement and a different lyric.
It reveals itself as a solidly constructed piece of music with a nice chord progression, once you remove the rockets' red glare from the orchestration and stop beating people over the head with the words.

8. I'm Very Happy
...to say I've never heard the song, as far as I know. Lucky me!

11. I first heard it in the Navy
and I kept thinking, what a crappy song. It doesn't have a melody. it's a third grader's essay set to elevator music.

And then to make it creepy, right at the part where the song says to stand up, everybody did like zombies.

14. I remember singing that damned song in a grade school program.
I was in 5th grade. The teacher was an asshole. So I hate that song even more because it brings back memories of that horrible teacher.
