Bush: Iraq Violence a Defining Moment

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Bush said Friday that the flare-up in violence in oil-rich southern Iraq and parts of Baghdad presents "a defining moment in the history of a free Iraq" as the government there seeks to root out Shiite militias.

Bush made clear that the United States stands firmly behind Iraqi security forces and Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. "He made the decision to move and we'll help him," the president said.

The troops we have been training and giving arms to for 5 years are
either quiting or giving their weapons to Sadr's army, we are paying the
Sunnis (backed by Saudi Arabia) not to shoot us, and Turkey is fighting
the Kurds in northern Iraq.

6. The "success" of the surge is a myth that is over.
I hope that the coming violence won't benefit mccain. I tend to think the opposite will be true. The "surge" boosted support for the war a bit.

7. Is this recent 'flare-up' over OIL?
Last month, the maliki government caved into the bfee by giving away the Iraqi oil to the oil consortiums. Then we start hearing of oil trucks, (lots of them), being blown up and oil pipelines being sabotaged. Now the maliki army is ordering the populist al-Sadr backers to lay down their arms in Basra, the major seaport in an Oil rich province. Is it possible that the populists are trying to prevent the theft of Iraqi oil regardless of what the maliki government did last month?

Wouldn't we here in America do something similar if an occupying nation tried to steal our resources in the same way the bfee is enabling that theft of Iraqi resources? I post this because I just don't know what the hell is going on over there....it is not like I am about to learn any truths by watching the news...so I am reduced to this speculation.
