Conspiracy or coincidence? Flight 93 memorial attacked over crescent shape
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/conspiracy-or-coincidence-flight-93-memorial-attacked-over-crescent-shape-802363.html

By Leonard Doyle in Shanksville, Pennsylvania
Saturday, 29 March 2008

United Airlines Flight 93 came in low and fast over this poor Appalachian community, passing directly over a scrapyard where one of the few witnesses to the disaster said the plane was at a tilt and low enough to "count the rivets".

Burnished into the nation's collective memory of 11 September 2001 is the heroism of Flight 93's passengers, who overwhelmed the hijackers and forced them to ditch the plane rather than let them attempt an attack on the US Capitol building 150 miles away.

But disagreement and rancour has dogged efforts to commemorate the 40 victims of terrorism on this Pennsylvania hillside. Seven and a half years after the tragedy, several family members of those who perished say that the planned memorial is in the shape of an Islamic crescent and points directlytowards Mecca.

2. The design should be discarded since it offends some
of the families. The designer should be compassionate about that.

4. By the way, did they ever find any bodies at the crash site??
Inquiring minds would like to know.

7. While I have empathy for families who lost members, this is ridiculous (picts here)
Do they not go outside when the moon is in a crescent shape?

Article on "crescent of embrace" with many pictures

It will serve as a living tribute. With each wind, each breeze, a set of chimes housed in a 93-foot tower will create a different song in memory of the 40 people who sacrificed their lives trying to save the lives of others.

Four years after United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a reclaimed strip mine near Shanksville, Somerset County, on Sept. 11, 2001, the design that will serve as the national memorial was unveiled here yesterday in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Hall of Flags.

"Crescent of Embrace" will feature a Tower of Voices, containing 40 wind chimes -- one for each passenger and crew member who died -- and two stands of red maple trees that will line a walkway caressing the natural bowl shape of the land. Forty separate groves of red and sugar maples will be planted behind the crescent, and a black slate wall will mark the edge of the crash site, where the remains of those who died now rest.

8. The crescent moon
The crescent moon appears on the flags of several Islamic countries (Pakistan, Turkey, Tunisia, Northern Cyprus, etc.). I believe it represents the beginning of the month as defined on the Islamic lunar calendar.
