Sunday, April 17, 2005 Posted: 1116 GMT (1916 HKT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Spc. Keith Maupin, one of two Americans missing since their convoy came under attack near Baghdad International Airport in 2004, has been promoted to sergeant, the Army said Saturday.

The announcement came after an Army board of inquiry met April 6 to confirm Maupin's status as "missing-captured," his status since he disappeared April 9, 2004, when the fuel convoy he was riding in was attacked by insurgents near Baghdad International Airport...

12. He looked like such a happy kid in the first pic, and so frightened in the second.
Horrid. I hope that the family has some closure now in spite of this tragedy.

18. spot on that he was frightened in the second pic...
That pic is a still from the aired video in which he was shot at the end...

The govt and his parents held hope for so long that he was alive because the camera in the video panned away from Matt, and when the shooting occurred it showed the back of his head...

I live one county over from where he grew up, and for the last 4 years a week has not gone by where I haven't seen some kind of sign or tribute to Matt so he wasn't forgotten...

His parents have been slated to speak tomorrow at Cincy's ballpark and are still going to after getting this new information... That says a lot about their character.. They have spent the last 4 years making sure Matt and other soldiers arnt forgotten..

Im so glad this is finally over for them...

8. Condolences to the Maupin family.
I recall a conversation between one of my friends and a baby-faced Marine in the spring of 2003. The Marine pooh-poohed concern over the invasion turning into a long-term slog. His exact quote was, "This (Iraq War) is strictly a no-casualty conflict, ma'am." I hope that kid made it and is okay. Matt Maupin's life meant something but George Bush wasted it.

10. do you remember when Saddam's statue came down ?
some of the soldiers there were calling family members. i saw one of them say to his mother that it was over now and they will be coming home. i remember thinking how wrong he was about that.

14. They were really sold a bill of goods.
The spin made it sound like spring break. "They'll be throwing flowers in the street! You will be welcomed as heroes!" Next thing they know they're trapped in stop-loss. I can't believe that the administration is still getting away with it.

11. HIs mom is a bus driver at my husband's former high school.
Every time we visit his parents, we pass the school where there's been a vigil for the last 4 years.

So sad how this has finally come to an end.

13. My heart goes out to the family
If there is any bright spot in this horrible situation, it is that they have their son's remains and can give him a proper burial. The wondering has stopped and the mourning can begin.
