Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos Are 'Freedom Chips' for Cows, Says Group

Plano, Texas - Stephen Colbert's favorite flavor of Doritos is a big hit at PETA's headquarters too. Frito-Lay's new Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos, which are the "official sponsor" of The Colbert Report's coverage of the presidential primaries, have earned praise from PETA because they are the first Doritos variety that is 100 percent vegan, meaning that they contain no animal ingredients whatsoever. Many chips--including earlier and less tasty incarnations of Doritos--contain whey, cheese, and other artery-clogging dairy ingredients. PETA is presenting Frito-Lay with a certificate of appreciation for providing consumers with a new and tasty vegan snack and is promoting the new chips on its youth Web site, peta2.com, where the kids are "all about vegan snack foods."

PETA has a beef with many other flavored chips because cows are "raped" via artificial insemination every year to maintain milk production. Calves are torn away from their mothers within a day or two after birth so that humans can drink the milk that nature intended for the baby cows. Kidnapped male calves are tied in cramped, filthy crates for 14 to 17 weeks until they are killed for veal. Female calves either replace their mothers as "milk machines" on the assembly line or are killed for the rennet in their stomachs, a cruel ingredient used in dairy cheese.

"Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos let you crunch all you want without hurting cows," says PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk. "We urge everyone who finds cruelty to animals distasteful to cast their vote for Doritos' new 'freedom chips.'"

Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos are available at supermarkets, drug stores, and convenience stores. For more information, visit PETA's Web site PETA.org.

2. These would have came in handy back when I was a vegan
Living a vegan lifestyle is very hard, not because I don't like the food (I love the food and variety), but there are very few places that provide vegan products.

Kudos to Frito Lay.

5. Sitting here eating Fritos by chance
Corn, corn oil and salt. That's it. Not vegan? Many chips used to use hydrogenated oil, but many have dropped it.

6. With or without Olestra?
Tough decision there... "murder" a calf or suffer the consequences of anal leakage.

7. My Guess is without

Research showed doritos eaters aren't health conscience and dropped it from that line of chips.

8. They don't make that flavor with Olestra.
Just the regular flavor, but maybe not even that. It's been absent from the stores for many weeks and nobody seems to know why.

And as far as the side effects, I've eaten them and never suffered them.

If you're a vegan, that's cool and all, just don't try to force me or anyone else to become ones.

Besides, idiots like PETA are one of the reasons we have a lot of working class people in this country who vote Republican despite the fact it's in their own best interest to not do so.

is PETA to blame for people voting Republican?

29. I'd love to address your post, but...
I'm off to tie down a carnivore and force-feed him raw fruits and vegetables.

Because, really, that's what vegans do all day.

If you're a vegan, that's cool and all, just don't try to force me or anyone else to become ones.

17. I used to think PETA was way way out there

My youngest daughter gave me the Paul McCartney PETA DVD two years ago for Christmas. The documentaries on the video turned me. I do eat meat, but I look at PETA in a very different light ever since then. Strange people get so upset about the terrorists PETA.

I bought this documentary about a month ago: http://www.uncagedfilms.com/trailer.php

Following the recent bombing in Jerusalem in which a live donkey, laden with explosives, was blown up, shocking people of all nationalities around the world, PETA has written to Palestinian National Authority President Yasser Arafat asking that he urge those who listen to him to keep animals out of the conflict.

At PETA, we strive to end violence every day. As Albert Schweitzer stated, “Until he extends the circle of compassion to all living things, man will not himself find peace.”
PETA’s letter to Yasser Arafat

February 3, 2003

Yasser Arafat, President
Palestinian National Authority
Ramallah, West Bank
Palestinian Authority

1 page via facsimile: 972 7 282 2365

Your Excellency:

I am writing from an organization dedicated to fighting animal abuse around the world. We have received many calls and letters from people shocked at the bombing in Jerusalem on January 26 in which a donkey, laden with explosives, was intentionally blown up.

All nations behave abominably in many ways when they are fighting their enemies, and animals are always caught in the crossfire. The U.S. Army abandoned thousands of loyal service dogs in Vietnam. Al-Qaeda and the British government have both used animals in hideously cruel biological weaponry tests. We watched on television as stray cats in your own compound fled as best they could from the Israeli bulldozers.

Animals claim no nation. They are in perpetual involuntary servitude to all humankind, and although they pose no threat and own no weapons, human beings always win in the undeclared war against them. For animals, there is no Geneva Convention and no peace treaty—just our mercy.

If you have the opportunity, will you please add to your burdens my request that you appeal to all those who listen to you to leave the animals out of this conflict?

We send you sincere wishes of peace.

Very truly yours,

Ingrid Newkirk
President, PETA

23. PETA is just praising a product.
I fail to see where they're...

Oh, forget it.

You know, sometimes, it IS important to some of us. I wouldn't have known this if not for PETA's notice on this.

Oh well, fuck me then. Lost cause and all...

14. mmm, industrial GMO corn...
I like that cows aren't being abused in industrial CAFOs for this variety of Doritos, but I still wouldn't eat it. I would and do eat plenty of dairy from free-range grass fed cows though, which puts me in the OMFG YOU COW RAPER category...

PETA has weird priorities.

Fact that something is vegan gives you an alert to toss something in the trash?
