If Al Gore was completing his second term ...
... we would be preparing to anoint Joe Lieberman as the 2008 Democratic presidential nominee.

So as we come closer to the end of our long quarrel -- has it only been three months? -- it's good that we take a moment and remember to thank (insert deity of choice here) for the occasionally beneficial unintended consequence.

1. If Al Gore was president, there would have been no Iraq War
That, more than anything else, was the source of our falling out with Lieberman. Hence, I suspect he would have had a lot of support in the counterfactual world you mention.

2. I would gladly, GLADLY support Lieberman today...
if it meant we wouldn't have had to live the last 8 nightmarish years under Boosh.

4. Joe LIEberman's voting record is more liberal than that of any Republican senator.
That's not setting the bar very high, I know.

3. Ted Kennedy ran against an incumbent president Jimmy Carter.
We would not necessarily be supporting LIEberman.

It's also possible that losing the Vice Presidency is what turned LIEberman to The Dark Side.

For all we know, Vice President LIEberman would have given us another 8 years of Gore-like progressive policies.

Or, LIEberman would have been caught in bed with a live boy or dead woman by now and replaced with Nancy Pelosi.

5. I really enjoy exploring
temporal distortions. All of the scenarios suggested above -- to varying degrees -- seem as outlandish as the one we're currently living.

12. and the Twin Towers were still standing, and the budget surplus .....
It is easy to imagine a very different reality if the NeoCons were all retired in TX.
Gore would not have ignored the Middle East.
The most important question is, "If Gore were President, would the 9/11 attacks have happened?"

Stealing Florida and installing this NeoCon Junta has uncounted unintended consequences.

14. If Al Gore was completing his second term, for all we know
Lieberman might be wearing flowers in his hair and singing that beautiful song about going to San Francisco.

See the movie "It's A Wonderful Life" for full details.
