Fla. Teens Believe Drinking Bleach Will Prevent HIV/Mt Dew stops pregnancy
Survey: Fla. Teens Believe Drinking Bleach Will Prevent HIV
Some Teens Also Believe Mountain Dew Will Stop Pregnancy

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A recent survey that found some Florida teens believe drinking a cap of bleach will prevent HIV and a shot of Mountain Dew will stop pregnancy has prompted lawmakers to push for an overhaul of sex education in the state.

The survey showed that Florida teens also believe that smoking marijuana will prevent a person from getting pregnant.

State lawmakers said the myths are spreading because of Florida's abstinence-only sex education, Local 6 reported.

They are proposing a bill that would require a more comprehensive approach, the report said.

It would still require teaching abstinence but students would also learn about condoms and other methods of birth control and disease prevention.

Look for a spike in teen pregnancies and births over the next year...

Omigod!

How horrifying...

When people don't have proper information, they will seize on anything to fill the gaps...

Oh, yeah...abstinence works...to get them pregnant! :puke:

Vachel Lindsay, yes, you know, the clever guy who wrote:

Whirl ye the deadly voo-doo rattle,

Harry the uplands,

Steal all the cattle,

Rattle-rattle, rattle-rattle,

Bing.

Boomlay, boomlay, boomlay, Boom

Crushed by financial worry (based on that last verse?), in poor health he sunk into depression, and on December 5, 1931, Lindsay committed suicide by drinking a bottle of disinfectant.

His last words something like "they were out to get me, but I got here first"

10. K&R for the blinkered PIG IGNORANCE
this administration has allowed to flourish and spread due to the lack of honest, complete sex education.

I have no complaint about teaching abstinence as the ultimate prevention of both pregnancy and disease. I do complain about teaching it in such a total vacuum of information about how to have sex safely. Ignorant teenagers who listen to the demands of their bodies and who are desperate for information will always be suckers for stuff that can be fatal, like drinking bleach to prevent HIV. I do complain about dishonesty that says condoms offer no protection and that a six week fetus is equivalent to a six month old infant.

14. This is what happens when teens are kept ignorant of facts.
I have no problem with abstinence being taught as *ONE* method of birth control and disease prevention, but we owe it to teenagers to give them complete and comprehensive information on the subjects and access to reliable and effective birth control products.

22. I don't even get the concept of "teaching abstinence".
Obviously if you don't engage in an activity, that pretty much negates any risks associated with said activity. If that is something that has to be taught, the current crop of students are so damn dumb they will never be functional in the real world.

If they catch your son with any critical thinking--maybe during a backpack search--the principal will probably confiscate it and turn him over to the police.

At 23, it wasn't long ago that I was in school. I left after 10th grade due to health issues, but back then, I can't recall anyone being so ignorant of the reproductive process and STDs. We learned about that stuff in middle school! What has gone wrong in the past few years?

25. I'm not surprised, I think I've heard just about it all when it comes to HIV/AIDS.
in vitro, bleach kills HIV, but we all know what happens when you drink bleach...

Add to that this monstrously failed abstinence only education and that the government still sends out materials misrepresenting how HIV is transmitted, I'm not surprised at all as to why there's all this confusion.

27. This simply proves the fact
That you can take away the knowledge, but not the need for it.

The need for birth control isn't going to go away as long as we continue to need to breed as a species...but apparently lots of people think we can defy nature and win.

She always wins.

Questionnaires like this don't mean diddly squat so far as what teens really think. What was the percentage of 'stupid' responses, anyway?

There are a lot of Democrats in Florida as well. I'm skeptical about the whole thing...but still against abstinence-only education. Teens will get info from somewhere...peers, movies, internet, somewhere. It doesn't have to make sense for them to believe it.

It's no surprise that red state have more teen pregnancies.
