Male rock fans likely to vote Republican: survey
By Sue Zeidler
2 hours, 25 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - If you are male and a Led Zeppelin fan, chances are you may be leaning toward voting Republican in the U.S. presidential election, according to a survey of rock radio fans released on Wednesday.

The Jacobs Media's Media/Technology Web Poll IV of more than 27,000 respondents cited stronger than expected interest in the November 2008 election among fans of rock, classic rock, and alternative radio stations.

It also found that John McCain, the Republican candidate for U.S. president, was the top pick for the Oval Office for men and classic rock partisans -- those people who tune in to stations playing music from the "original classic rock era" of 1964 to 1975, comprised of bands like Led Zeppelin, The Who and Pink Floyd.

Jacobs Media said the survey, conducted among 69 U.S. rock-formatted stations in markets as diverse as Los Angeles and Knoxville to Buffalo, found 84 percent of the respondents planned to vote in the November election.

"People are clearly engaged by this election, even rockers. A lot of stations tend to shy away from politics because it's so polarizing, but this data suggests they'd better find a way to talk about politics this fall to keep listeners interested," said Fred Jacobs, president of Jacobs Media. He said the company threw the political questions in as an afterthought and was surprised by the results.

The survey was conducted in late February and early March. .....(more)

79. It HAS TO be total BS!
It's possible that male rock fans are less interested in politics. However, to say they vote republican is a stretch.

My ex boyfriend (still a good friend) is a rock musician (guitar player) is Thoroughly Liberal, and his cousin is equally into rock music, classic to metal, and is equally liberal-progressive-Democratic.

I like rock music, classic rock, newer rock, alternative, grunge, metal, math-rock, etc... and look at me, here on DU. (but I'm a woman, so never mind).

Ever listened to Rush lyrics? Pink Floyd lyrics?
Or maybe, the study was limited to Ted Nugent fans.

10. So?
So people who have never listened to any music made after 1975 are Republicans? Am I supposed to be surprised?

Some of these McCain-voting "Pink Floyd fans" ought to go back and listen to some of those songs a little more carefully - Roger Waters could teach them a thing or two.

But that doesn't keep STUPID reporters (who've never had even the most basic stats class) from acting as though the numbers are sacrosanct.

Or people like Fred Jacobs from making money off of them.

I'm 39 years old. I grew up listening to Led Zeppelin, BOC, Pink Floyd, Rush, and so on. And I still love to listen to these bands--on occasion.

But if you're in my general age group and you're still listening to your local Clear Channel classic rock station as your main source of music, the station that only plays songs that were in the top 10 way back in the day, the station that still thinks it's cool to play AOR stuff like Comfortably Numb 3 times a day 30 years after its release...well, it could be argued that you're stuck in the past. And that begins to approach the definition of conservatism (and maybe a lack of imagination too). I still love to hear Free Bird, but on my own schedule, which works out to be about once every 3 years or so. I listen to newer music. Hell, I've learned to love much, much older music, for that matter (Django Reinhardt, anyone?). So it comes as no surprise to me that someone who solely subsists on the Doobie Brothers and Disraeli Gears or whatever would be likely to vote for McCain. These are the same people that want a simple, black and white world where the US are the good guys with the white hats and we kick ass and take names and go to monster truck shows.

This doesn't detract from old rock & roll at all. It speaks more of simpletons with no imagination. And if you're in your teens or twenties and you've just discovered Zeppelin and listen to them all the time, this post isn't referring to you. Congrats on finding a great old band and grooving to their catalog (maybe I'll be lucky enough to see you at the Plant/Krauss show). And if you're my age or older, and you're going back and listening to the deep tracks, this post isn't about you. It's about the stuck-in-the-rut people; and they're by and large Republican-leaning.

The bass was pretty good too. I don't know drums well enough to really judge, I'm a voice and string guy mostly. :) Unfortunately my voice is a little too classical for rock, and a little too rock for classical... but c'est la guerre. Can't do it all myself anyway. Gotta find other people to play with.

Nice balance on the guitar too, getting chords and solo type stuff in there together without either one standing out too much on their own and making it obvious that you've only got one guitar covering both ends of the spectrum. Not easy to pull off.

I also started on bass recently, but the bass I have is just a cheap starter one.

80. I've already dabbled a bit in recording some of my stuff
despite having no drums and it just being me. :)

http://www.stickmanltd.com/practicesessions/indarkness-shortversion.mp3 This was one of the first songs I ever wrote... back when I was dating a somewhat gothy girl. :) I could never record it before because I needed an electric guitar to pull it off properly, so I just recorded it recently. Not the best quality, and the bass, being a cheap starter bass, doesn't want to stay in tune. I never wrote a drum line for it (or a bassline for that matter, that I wrote just recently.), just two guitars and voice originally. And this was a quick test run to see how it turned out.

Everything else I have recorded (so far) is on my acoustic guitar.

DEVO is my #1 pick as opposite of "corporate rock".

Just tell me one thing....
You're a white male who loves Led Zeppelin. were you also long-haired, skinny, and shirtless throughout the mid-1970's through the mid 1980's?

It seems odd, but I remember seeing several of my older brothers' friends in the mid-late 70's and thinking they looked just like Robert Plant.

But when I still saw it in the 1980's on my friend's brothers, it seemed less cool, and more like a symptom of drug use. I was correct.

Anyway, cheers!

88. Well obviously not , since you like Metallica.
A boyfriend in 1990 introduced me to Metallica by playing the song Master of Puppets. I instantly liked it, yet I distrusted it, because it was probably satanic or something. He said no, listen again, it is more likely an anti-government statement, or a rebellious statement.

Clearly, the song "Master Of Puppets" is about cocaine or meth addiction.

anything after '...And Justice For All' is crap, IMO.

No, Metallica was never a 'Satanic' band. There really only a limited amount of 'satanic' bands and those you seem to be so are more then likely Atheistic.

But yeah, I like Metal and I do not vote for Fascist assholes: www.synister-radio.com (it's mine.)

in my hometown of cincinnait, he'd sell out 2 weeks of shows - and they'd be entirely filled with smug suburban republicans "cutting loose".

but conservatives who like "rock" don't listen to the lyrics. remember when "Born in the USA" was top 10? i never liked bruce, but the lyrics:

Born down in a dead man's town
The first kick I took was when I hit the ground
You end up like a dog that's been beat too much
'Til you spend half your life just covering up

that'll inspire patriotism! GO USA!

(How can schools teach "critical-thinking skills?")

From the yahoo article: "The Jacobs Media's Media/Technology Web Poll IV of more than 27,000 respondents cited..."

From an article on web polls: "Here's why news organizations of all kinds sprinkle their Web sites with self-selected opinion polls, despite the fact that even journalists understand that such polls are unreliable: Readers enjoy them. They're fodder for discussion, and, as an editor here put it not long ago, "People just like to click on buttons."

http://www.networkworld.com/columnists/2005/071805buzz.html?page=2

It's like getting on an uncalibrated scale- you could weigh 180lbs. or 230lbs, who knows? The poll doesn't actually measure anything about 'rockers' at all, but the above quote sure seems to be true. We're talking about it as if it does.

Not exactly a vibe that resonates with leftist ideals...but some of it may be misguided youth/affectation. However, I did include Thrones in my list! ...back in the early 90s my then band played a show w/Melvins, I had forgotten my drum rug and so the bass kept sliding, Joe and Dale came out with a piece of 2x4, nails and a hammer and erected a makeshift bass drum anchor!!! :toast: Since then I've met up with Joe at a handful of other Melvins, and then Thrones, gigs. For those not in the know, Thrones is Joe Preston's one man band. Joe had his beginnings in the early 90s seminal drone band, Earth, and along with Thrones, has since done stints in SunnO))) and High on Fire. He is very down to earthy people. He likes cats. :P

92. For those of you who are saying bullshit...
..did it occur to you that you might represent the smaller portion that does vote Dem? Just because you're not going to vote repub doesn't invalidate the survey. And you shouldn't take it personally that many will (and equally, those using a broad brush against classic rock fans should think again and remember you people who aren't idiots).

Just because there may be a lot of idiots into that music doesn't make you guys idiots, and it doesn't make the music any different either. Don't be so defensive. I, for one, don't see you all as cluster of Repub loving fools. :)

Trust me, as a punk fan from way back, even though a lot of the bands themselves weren't right leaning, a ton of the fans were, and were the same blockheaded types we're talking about here. Some of them took the words of the great punk bands to heart, but many just saw the shows as a chance to knock heads like thugs. But just because we were into the same music doesn't mean the losers defined me, and nor do the losers here define you. Only you can do that, and by voting Dem or progressive you're doing your part. That's all you can do.

96. "many just saw the shows as a chance to knock heads" - jocks killed our local scene in the mid 90s
While I was in it for several yrs from the late 80s to mid 90s, there was a vibrant, thriving local music scene here in this part of the midwest. Whether you were an arsty college student, a self proclaimed "punk," or one of the druggie doom metalheads like myself {I've got Born Too Late tattooed on my arm}, there was room for all, and all were welcome ... there were so many memorable bands!

Then... Nirvana became a household name {no fault of theirs, really} and slowly the social climate changed as it became increasingly trendy for the the drunken-blowhard-jock crowd {who went on to be the main supporters of rap/hip hop, which to me is like the disco of now} to come to more local shows as slam dancing and moshing pits provided easy opportunities for dickheads to start fights, ruin the night, get the fuckin cops called, big stupid drama, etc.

Yet another example of mainstream fools and their mainstream ideals and aims desperately wanting to adopt the "outsider" posture/charisma without having a clue as to what any of it meant at its heart. They're the same ones who went for the pseudo-country phase, then the misogynistic rap phase, and now ride around on their $50k worth of Standard Issue Bad Boy Harley Costume Ideal ...people who are anything but anti-establishment, don't like anti-establishment types, and only took on elements of sub-culture that fit their ideal: impress others with Big Dumb Macho. The real ones could give a shit what anyone thinks... :hippie:

Rock used to be one of the most effective protest devices around - a way of mobilizing and educating people. Are the voices (and they're still out there) being successfully stifled?

Since many of them think no good music has been made since the 60s and 70s, it's not surprising they're conservatives. Progress=bad.
