McCain might win, anyway, Mr. Conyers... |
|
and, if he does, then impeachment now would send a very clear message to him:
You cannot commit high crimes as pResident and get away with it.
That message needs to be sent, regardless of who is commander-in-chief. By refusing to impeach, the message is: The President is above the law. Do whatever the hell you want.

4. Actually, many excellent arguments against impeachment are around. |
|
1. It won't happen. The House Dems can barely agree on anything, and Dems elected in 2006 in traditionally GOP districts aren't going to flush their budding careers on an exercise with that amounts to tilting at windmills.
2. The Bush crew has been very careful in covering their butts. I don't mean deflection, I mean legally covering their asses. In almost every so-called offense you could toss, counter arguments exist demonstrating that either they had legal opinions supporting their actions or direct and clear permission from Congress.
3. If we impeach Bush, his approval ratings would skyrocket, and we might guarantee McCain's election. This would result in at least four more years of incredible scarfing up of executive powers that may never be undone.
And that's just a few.

5. Even if his ratings skyrocket, that will only make them visible again. |

He's in the twenties now and the subprime collapse isn't endearing him to anyone.

6. If we could impeach one of those bastards with even an outside chance of conviction... |
|
I'd be all for it.
There's just no way.

8. It worked on Nixon because he was isolated. |

The Bushes have too much power and Junior will not take one for the team.
But I still support impeachment and will support prosecuting these criminals until the last one joins the choir eternal.

12. You forgot the most important one: |
|
A bipartisan Congress signed off on everything Bush has done. The war, torture, wire tapping, in each situation Congress gave Bush the powers he wanted. It wasn't just the Republicans that empowered him, they never even had that strong a majority. Bush has always been slick at getting things done without having to get approval, but in these cases Congress expressly went along with his plans.
Even now that the Democrats control Congress they fold every time the President threatens a veto. If they can't even manage to take away the legal authority they helped give the administration, how are they supposed to have impeachment taken seriously?

9. I'm resigned to Bush being able to finishing his terms unscathed ... but |
|
I'm lobbying for the first Presidential act of the Democratic President to order the Secret Service to turn him over for trial for crimes against humanity ...

10. Impeachment is looking like a pipe dream, now. |
|
A year ago, eight months ago, we could have done it. Now, not so much. The little shit gets to live out his miserable existence in Paraguay with our money. Not a one of these fuckers, not even people actually sentenced like Scooter, will get their due. Message: crime pays, it pays big. Especially if you get to decide what's criminal.
