4. The problem is that STUPIDITY cannot be ended.

A certain percentage of the the population will always be incredibly stupid and fearful and ready to look for any scapegoat in a storm. Some will inevitably pick on race as their scapegoat issue, while others might pick on religion or political affiliation.

Regardless of how we enlightened we become as a species (which itself is not very likely) there will ALWAYS be ignorant and hate-filled individuals among us.

Reminds me of something one of my kids once said. I was trying to remember the names of all the three-year-olds who had been at a birthday party that day, and I asked my son the name of the little black girl. (Most were white, and there were a couple of Latinos, one black boy and one black girl.)

My son looked confused and said, "There weren't any black kids, Mom. Everybody was brown."

Being in the heart of the Deep South, I certainly knew it still existed, but my firsthand experiences told me things were getting better. However, I've recently started visiting some local blogs and message boards and am disturbed at a lot of the things I've been reading. It seems like every racist in a 100-mile area has come out of the closet (it would really make them sick to read that), as the anonymity afforded by the internet allows them to spew hatred with abandon. I hope I'm still around when their grandchildren bring home a brown boyfriend or girlfriend some day.
