Poll question: Got a link? |
|
I sorta chuckle when I see this in reply in a post. It strikes me as rude. As if to say 'I don't believe what you said, so prove it.'
What I want to say when I see it, is 'find your own damned link if it means that much to you.'

I click on posts because I have an intrest... sometimes I want to pass along the things I have learned. I rarely do this unless the OP provides a link that can be used IN ADDITION TO the OP and the thread. It is the combination of the original link(s), the OP's thoughts and the responses from our fellow DUers that matter to me. The whole package adds up to a sum higher than the individual parts, imo.

2. I think that if someone asserts or suggests something |
|
that I may not agree with OR I may want to read and forward, I'd appreciate a link to some decent material that backs up what was said.
Let's face it...one can Google anything and get a brazillion hits, half of which are shit. This defines the 19% that still think Bush is da man.

3. Most of the time it's just plain stoopid. |
|
Only rarely is a link requested for something that might be obscure, or difficult to research.
Most of the time it's for something that should be common knowledge, something that just pisses off the other poster whenever it's mentioned. Asking for a link is used as a way of manufacturing controversy, where there normally shouldn't be any.
Most posters who have a legitimate disagreement will usually just post a link to a countervailing account, if there is one that's handy, instead of demanding a link.

5. That's what I thought you were getting at. |

There does seem to be a pattern to it. You can almost picture them with their fingers in their ears... la la la la la la ...
..as if a link would solve anything.

6. Yesterday I asked a poster about a comment |
|
they had made regarding tolerance and sensitization to opiates in treating certain types of pain.
I got good info, if not a link. based on what I heard, the original point made sense.
So I think it can be a benign request. I know I have used it that way.

Providing a link supporting the info is customary but totally irrelevant, considering the factual inaccuracies that exist on the interwebs.
My retort to the "Got a link?" question is; "Got the Google?" or "Wikipedia is your friend".
