I was wondering why I haven't seen these poll numbers in the press..
Most Americans also have misgivings about the possibility of the federal government stepping in to help struggling investment companies and those facing foreclosure on their homes. Two in three Americans (68%) disagree with the idea of the federal government stepping in to help investment companies that are suffering because of their heavy investments in worthless mortgages - just 25% believe the government should take steps to help these companies.
Most are also opposed to federal assistance for Americans who are facing foreclosure - 54% believe the government should not step in to help individual Americans who are facing foreclosure on their homes because they cannot afford to pay their mortgages while 43% believe the government should offer assistance. While there is relatively minor political division regarding a federal bailout of investment companies - majorities of Democrats (60%), Republicans (70%) and independents (76%) disagree - the views vary greatly when the issue turns to bailing out individual Americans facing foreclosure. While 71% of Democrats support government assistance for these struggling homeowners, just 36% of independents and 18% of Republicans agree.
