Pizza.com being sold for a hot and spicy $3 million

By Steve Pounds | Thursday, April 3, 2008, 05:55 PM

Chris Clark is lucky guy with a lot of patience.

The software consultant from Maryland bought the name pizza.com for $20 in 1994, when the Web was new and uncharted territory.

Now he’s selling it at auction, and will probably fetch somewhere in the vicinity of $3 million.

Some guys have all the luck, especially if they bought a generic name like business.com or fund.com. Those also brought big bucks.

Anybody want to sit at their computers tonight and type in generic names? Who knows, maybe there’s still one out there unclaimed.

1. I recall reading in about 1999 that every word in the english language

had been scooped up. I imagine a lot of those have fallen out of registration time and again, but even now I bet there is nothing. I believe that was .com, .net, and .org. Hell, even short expressions are all pretty much taken.

I once met a guy who had registered every possible combination of San Antonio and well known businesses attached to San Antonio. He was confident he was gonna be rich. Maybe, but most businesses found a way around it, not wanting to pay the fees he hoped to extort.

Good for pizza guy, though, that is a great choice.
