I'm Alert button free and damn proud of it.
I mean, be and let be. Though others don't agree. I have seen things on this board that I thought were totally inappropriate, so I either ignored them or or responded. I have seen others manipulate threads into oblivian by posting remarks that they know would be "alerted", or for egging others onto making remarks that would definetly cause an alert then of course a thread can be locked up, I don't play those games, purposely making remarks and suggesting that remarks get made so that the alert button will be hit so that the thread will be shut down. It is quite a juvenile way to stop a conversation. So, I announce that I am a proud member of "Alert button free zone"

I wish more people were savy to this technique of shutting down threads and disallow it to happen.

Who will join me?

8. Be My Guest
Although I can't see why there should be any reasonable expectation on your part that responding to challenge what YOU say is a "totally inappropriate" remark should result in anything but inciting flame war with the offending poster.

You did read the rules, correct? Sometimes threads need to be shut down, perhaps?

We obviously have the function available for an "in extremis" reason; I consider it up to the admins and mods to determine when there's a factor of the same smartasses being serial-baiting offenders, or on the other hand, if they're getting deluged by petty alerters. I don't envy them these days, so I try not to bother them too often myself.

10. The "others" who don't agree with you are the Admins and Mods.
"Respect the moderators and administrators, and respect their decisions. You can help make their job easier by clicking the "Alert" link on any post that might need moderator attention." - from the DU rules

11. I take great satisfaction in seeing a known troll banned. Alert is my friend and is requested by
mods, and admin! So, it is my friend again now! Tee hee!

12. As a former moderator and long-time member, I use the Alert button responsibly.
I use it no matter whether I agree or disagree, particularly for overt personal attacks.

20. Former mod here too
Edited on Sat Apr-05-08 03:47 AM by Hippo_Tron
I can't imagine how crazy it is for the people moderating GDP. I see so many personal attacks here that I'm sure it's physically impossible for the mods to get to all of them.

17. this sounds like the time i could conduct an experiment.
okay--don't worry--i promise you won't feel a thing.

i am going to put you on ignore.

then i will come back here to see what you look like. (think m.r.i. or x-ray)

i will also see what this post to you looks like.

then i will try to reply to this post of yours again.

i will then take you off ignore--you might feel a little drowsy.

and i will report back (because i'm sure you'll be looking forward to hearing about the results)

18. why--it was amazing. truly. i couldn't see you there at all, but i could
sense your presence. it was almost as if i was reading your mind

and then i tried to get you back--but i felt something pulling my hand away from the keyboard, as if trying to tell me to keep ignoring you.

i shouted: NO! I CAN'T IGNORE 48PERCENTER ANYMORE! and i resisted the temptation of just going to bed after five hours of sleep 24 hours ago. i resisted and managed to get you off ignore, and back to where i can pay attention to you--just in the nick of time!

(i'm exhausted.)

existential question: if you have someone on ignore and they are tombstoned and you go into your ignore list of people--will they still be there? or will they have been tombstoned from your ignore list as well?

anyone can feel free to just jump right in and answer that last question.
