Even if he hadn't scratched, btw, there are already so many balls in the pocket from the roughly 350 people on DU who have already made that joke so there wasn't any more vacancy.

38. Hi coriolis, its the power of the internet that ..
makes people be this nasty. Its the last refuge, so that a small minded person with a big mouth can sleep easy at night. It empowers them to be nasty and spiteful because there is no face to face involved, nothing for them to respect. In their Daly lives they are miserable and want others to be to, so need someone to make fun of and look down upon. These types are on both the left and right. In this day and time I guess they need it to feel good about themselves. its all about Empowerment, ya know. Yes, there are some very nasty and small minded people here.

But, on the other hand I have met some very nice and opened minded people here, also. That Yin and yang thing I guess. I'm not the most PC guy in the world, but have been basically welcomed, as you can see I'm a newbie to. I've monitored this site for several years and just began posting recently. I was very, very surprised to find that there are some here who I can relate to. They hold some of the same beliefs and ideals that I do. Hell, my ignorant ass even learned here that not all Muslims are fanatic suicide bombers, some are very peaceful and practiuce what they preach. (thanks to the lady who pointed this out to me.)

Me, a gun totin, Harley ridin, free thinking progressive, Southern born and raised white boy. Having something in common with "libruls". Go figure, life is full of strange happenings.

Oh, and since this is about C.H. I liked most his movies, some really did have a message that wasn't welcomed by the right. Sometimes you need to have an open mind no matter how prejudice you may be. Now I'm gonna drink a beer and shoot my guns in his honor. Maybe shoot that stuffed monkey in the attic.

13. Some people on DU are pretty selective in who they consider human
even someone who risked their life for civil rights before it was popular. I disagreed with him on guns - so what? He in many ways appeared to be a very good man - and his work on civil rights is an example of his courage and ethics.

47. You know what he said at that meeting?
Here's the transcript:

Thank you. Thank you very much. Good morning. I am very happy to welcome you to this abbreviated annual gathering of the National Rifle Association. Thank you all for coming and thank you for supporting your organization.

I also want to applaud your courage in coming here today. Or course, you have a right to be here. As you know, we've cancelled the festivities, the fellowship we normally enjoy at our annual gatherings. This decision has perplexed a few and inconvenienced thousands. As your president, I apologize for that.

But it's fitting and proper that we should do this. Because NRA members are, above all, Americans. That means that whatever our differences, we are respectful of one another and we stand united, especially in adversity.

I have a message from the mayor, Mr. Wellington Webb, the mayor of Denver. He sent me this and said don't come here, we don't want you here. I said to the mayor, well, my reply to the mayor is, I volunteered for the war they wanted me to attend when I was 18 years old. Since then, I've run small errands for my country, from Nigeria to Vietnam. I know many of you here in this room could say the same thing. But the mayor said don't come.

I'm sorry for that. I'm sorry for the newspaper ads saying the same thing, don't come here. This is our country. As Americans, we're free to travel wherever we want in our broad land.

They say we'll create a media distraction, but we were preceded here by hundreds of intrusive news crews. They say we'll create political distraction, but it's not been the NRA pressing for political advantage, calling press conferences to propose vast packages of new legislation.

Still they say don't come here. I guess what saddens me the most is how that suggests complicity. It implies that you and I and 80 million honest gun owners are somehow to blame, that we don't care. We don't care as much as they do, or that we don't deserve to be as shocked and horrified as every other soul in America mourning for the people of Littleton.

Don't come here. That's offensive. It's also absurd because we live here. There are thousands of NRA members in Denver, and tens upon tens of thousands in the state of Colorado.

NRA members labor in Denver's factories, they populate Denver's faculties, run Denver corporations, play on Colorado sports teams, work in media across the Front Range, parent and teach and coach Denver's children, attend Denver's churches and proudly represent Denver in uniform on the world's oceans and in the skies over Kosovo at this very moment.

NRA members are in city hall, Fort Carson, NORAD, the Air Force Academy and the Olympic Training Center. And yes, NRA members are surely among the police and fire and SWAT team heroes who risked their lives to rescue the students at Columbine.

Don't come here? We're already here. This community is our home. Every community in America is our home. We are a 128-year-old fixture of mainstream America. The Second Amendment ethic of lawful, responsible firearm ownership spans the broadest cross section of American life imaginable.

So, we have the same right as all other citizens to be here. To help shoulder the grief and share our sorrow and to offer our respectful, reassured voice to the national discourse that has erupted around this tragedy.

One more thing. Our words and our behavior will be scrutinized more than ever this morning. Those who are hostile towards us will lie in wait to seize on a soundbite out of context, ever searching for an embarrassing moment to ridicule us. So, let us be mindful. The eyes of the nation are upon us today.

They actually cancelled everything they were legally allowed to cancel; they only held the annual business meeting, as required by law.

The "cold dead hands" speech was made a year later, in Charlotte, NC, not in Colorado.

48. And Who Deserves More Scorn?

The life-long racist right-wing knuckle dragger whose ugly viewpoints never change---or someone like Heston, who associated himself with the civil rights movement, who knew how right and valuable a cause it was, and yet he ended up walking away from that association, over to the political Dark Side, utterly repudiating whatever noble inclinations he might have had and exchanging Martin Luther King for Ronald Reagan and Ted Nugent. I think the lifelong racist comes out on top in that comparison; if you Heston-worshiping gun obsessives don't like it---shoot me.

39. I really don't understand this.
So the man's politics weren't in line with many around here. So what? It's not like he was running the government or something. Just because two people disagree doesn't mean one of them is a villain.

I look at the ridiculous hysterics the right-wing regularly goes through regarding celebrities and their work, and I wonder how fragile a mind must be to lash out at people just for disagreeing. To shun their work, or to mock it, or just dismiss them as human beings because of this or that stance on a political issue. Then I turn around and see the same damn thing happening here.

C'mon, people-- seriously.

44. I don't know-- I certainly felt it was tasteless, but
look at it from a gun rights activist's point of view for a moment. They're convinced that all the problems associated with guns could be managed via responsible gun ownership, and they believe that tragedies like the one at Columbine are exploited by our media to build popular support for undermining one of our Constitutional rights.

I think they felt they were doing the right thing. I don't agree, and as I said, I thought it was quite tasteless. But I don't think one transgression is something to condemn a person for.

If you make a slogan and repeat it and kknow you are being quoted and having it broadcast to the entire country multiple times that says the only way you are going to get X away from me is if you "pry it from my cold dead hands" you have to recognize that this is going to set you up for jokes when you die.
