Third-Grader Suspended For Sniffing Marker
Third-Grader Suspended For Sniffing Marker

Officials said Ethan Harris was sent to the principal's office after a teacher caught him sniffing his sleeve, which he had colored with the marker, and smelling the marker itself.

The boy's teacher reported Ethan's actions and the principal suspended him for three days.

"They just suspended me for a day," Ethan said. "They didn't even tell me what was wrong."

Ethan's father said the punishment was too extreme. He said the school assumed his son was huffing a marker but said that was not the case.

"He's 8 years old. And I think that's a ridiculous assumption," James Harris said.

2. Bullshit!
It is not too extreme. Sniffing markers is extremely harmful to the brain and the school would he held accountable if the kid was not stopped. Parents get yer kid some help, stop blaming the school.

16. (lol) I recall loving the smell of transit bus exhaust.
Whenever we'd go shopping, we'd take the bus. When we got off, I found ways to stand at the edge of the curb so I could inhale the exhuast fumes. I was probably five years old or so. It was 1948 or thereabouts.

:silly: :dunce:

with the back window open -- the back seat faced toward the window -- & we giggled about how we enjoyed smelling the exhaust fumes. What innocent days the '60s were!

Same effect - all that exhaust just hovering at below nose level. This was in the early 80's to 85 during my jr. high/high school years.

and we sniffed mimeograph sheets in school like there was no tomorrow.

By all accounts, we should have died in elementary school.

37. Those were nice, but what I liked even better was stuff printed with the "spirit duplicator"...
...you know, where they used this ethereal, sweet-smelling alcohol to activate the ink and all the print came out purple -- until the very end of the run, where it was more lavender-coloured.

Somehow we managed to get by without computers and all the stuff that goes with them, such as "desktop publishing" and laser or ink-jet printers that make everything look pretty regardless of content. And we LIKED it! Who needs power point, really, when you can get your point across with an overhead projector (still around) or opaque projector (I haven't seen one of those in years and I still don't know how one works) or roll-down maps? Somehow people think that being able to put one's empty words into a nice-looking publicaton makes those words more legitimate.

I'm afraid that society today is all about the promotion of style over substance.

but these days, the schools are held accountable for everything and damned if they do or don't. back in our day, our parents just kicked our asses if we got out onf line. School didn't have to.

18. Same here. No seatbelts. OTOH, we didn't HAVE "markers".
We had pencils, pens, and crayons. We would sometimes eat the crayons, too. And bits of paper.

And we made mudpies outside and played with them; one of the neighbor kids ate dirt. And we all grew up normal.

Get him some help? Because he likes the smell of marker? How old are you? Do you know in schools we used to get our tests from "carbon or mimeograph paper" and every kid in the class would sniff his/her test when it was passed out. Not only that but the kid was sniffing his sleeve, that had marker on it. I don't think this kid needs help. I think the school needs to lighten up.

edit: Go to the link and look at the kid. Tell me again how this is a kid who needs help because he's getting high from markers  He probably doesn't know what "high" is. I can't believe this happened my state :eyes:

If the school is going to insist on treating this as a drug-use situation, shouldn't the drug distributors be held accountable for putting a toxic substance into the hands of a minor?

27. My mom was a teacher and had a small home mimeograph
machine that she would run tests off on. I can still remember the smell. And yeah, I loved the smell of some gasolines, but not all brands. Amoco was good and so was ESSO but I didn't like Shell or Texaco. Bike riding, skating and skateboarding without helmets or pads. Long car trips without seatbelts. I remember sometime crawling up on the ledge of the back window in the car and taking a nap. All things considered, it's amazing that any of us of a certain age survived our childhoods. Now I look at my daughter, aged 5, and wonder what fun things are there left for her to do that when she is my age she'll look back on and wonder how she survived her childhood.

35. Markers? Meh! I spent a good part of my childhood huffing DDT.
The spray truck would come around in early evening and us kids would ride our bikes behind the truck pretending we were fighter pilots zooming through the clouds.

One of the dads in the neighborhood had a pickup truck and he would tow a half-dozen of us around in my wagon; he'd take the turns faster and faster until the wagon overturned and a pile of kids fell into the street.

If kids today did a 10th of the shit we did 40 or 50 years ago, we'd be in foster care and the grownups would be in jail!
