4. James Buchanan is arguably the worst... |
|
Edited on Tue Apr-08-08 01:12 AM by ElkHunter
...given his inaction to prevent the Civil War. Here's a quote about Buchanan that pretty much sums it up:
"As Southern states declared their secession in the lead-up to the American Civil War, he held that secession was illegal, but that going to war to stop it was also illegal. Taking his own advice, he did nothing."
Of course that doesn't let Dubya off the hook. He's definitely the worse President in my lifetime and one of the worse ever.

He was something of a vacuous stooge for the pro-slavery forces. Actually, that would be a pretty good description of his presidency, I think.

8. Part of me wishes the southern states would have been left alone to peacefully secede. |
|
The south in general has caused the entire nation so much grief and pain, and they would be left pretty much powerless as a separate country.
However, the grief and pain of the slaves who would be taken with secession is also great.

I wonder how history would have evolved if that had happened? Sounds like the subject matter of a good novel....

16. I'm pretty sure it's been written already. |
|
Fun topic to think about though, given the different resources that the north and the south have. In all actuality, slavery might have been abolished anyways, just slightly later.
Also consider the impact it would have on the outcome of the world wars, as well as the middle east conflicts.

For the wealthy and powerful few, he has been the best president ever.
For the other 99% of the people, the working people, I don't think there can be any doubt whatsoever that this has been the worst administration in history.
