Can someone tell me how family-run foundations work? I've read that nearly all of the Clintons' $10 million in charity has been given to their own foundation, and that nearly half of that has not been passed on to any actual charities.

How is this primary bickering crap? I was just asking a question how family foundations worked. Period. So I intentionally did not post in the Primary forum.
Awfully sensitive aren't we????

2. A foundation isn't required to give all its money away. |
|
They're simply required to give away (more-or-less) enough money each year that absent new capital inflows, they would continue to give away money in perpetuity and not grow their endowment balance.
That is, they can't "profit" from their investments over the long term; they have to give away the profits.

3. The foundations are a way to continue charitable donations indefinitely |
|
If you spend all the money it is gone. If you spend a portion of it, the rest is left to gain interest and that interest is in turn used to make donations.
They cannot take the money out of the foundation for their own use.
Once given to the foundation it is no longer "theirs".

that is available for free down-load due to it's copyright expiration. It is called 'The Rich and the Super-Rich' by Ferdinand Lundberg, and it has a chapter on philanthropy. There is also other good stuff available.. http://www.soilandhealth.org/03sov/0303critic/0303socialcriticism.html
