Joe Lieberman's Popularity Continues to Tank
from AlterNet's PEEK:

Joe Lieberman's Popularity Continues to Tank

Posted by Kos , Daily Kos at 3:17 PM on April 7, 2008.

Only Republicans seem to like old Joe these days.

Given Lieberman's high-profile efforts on behalf of John McCain, I wondered how his constituents were taking it. So I had independent pollster Research 2000 reprise a poll I commissioned last year testing a rematch between Ned Lamont and Joe Lieberman. I found last year that buyer's remorse had set in. It's even worse this year.

Research 2000 for Daily Kos. 3/31-4/2. Regular voters. MoE 4% (9/10-12/2007 results)

If you could vote again for U.S. Senate, would you vote for Ned Lamont, the Democrat, Alan Schlesinger, the Republican, or Joe Lieberman, an Independent?

All

Lamont (D) 51 (48)

Lieberman (I) 37 (40)

Schlesinger (R) 7 (9)

Democrats

Lamont (D) 74 (72)

Lieberman (I) 19 (25)

Schlesinger (R) 2 (3)

Republicans

Lamont (D) 4 (7)

Lieberman (I) 74 (69)

Schlesinger (R) 19 (24)

Independents

Lamont (D) 53 (49)

Lieberman (I) 36 (38)

Schlesinger (R) 6 (9)

Lieberman has shored up his support with Republicans, who clearly see him as one of their own. He has predictably lost ground among Democrats. But interestingly, he also lost the same amount of ground (six points) with independents.

Clearly, his whole "independent" schtick isn't playing well with real independent voters. I'll have more on this poll later today. The crosstabs are below the fold. Crosstabs for last year's poll can be found here. Unfortunately, there's no approve/disapprove numbers from last time since I forgot to ask for that data (I think it was my first poll ever commissioned).

CONNECTICUT POLL RESULTS - APRIL 2008

The Research 2000 Connecticut Poll was conducted from March 31 through April 2, 2008. A total of 600 likely voters who vote regularly in state elections were interviewed statewide by telephone.

Those interviewed were selected by the random variation of the last four digits of telephone numbers. A cross-section of exchanges was utilized in order to ensure an accurate reflection of the state. Quotas were assigned to reflect the voter registration of distribution by county. .......(more)

7. Those of us "in the trenches" working for Ned tried very hard.
But it was more complicated than just the war issue. There were Dems who thought that losing Joe would mean losing our clout in the Senate. Ned didn't make his case in that regard, but who could blame him?

Also, what I found in my calling Dems for Ned was a feeling that Ned wasn't "like" them. He was a rich man living in Greenwich. If the election didn't go his way, well, he'd go back to his mansion and his cushy life. That was the distinct feeling I got from these Dems. IT was unfair of course but in reality it was basically true. I think the world of Ned Lamont but upon reflection I believe he was a bit naive. However, I loved it that at least he tried and can be credited for being an early voice against the war.

Since that election, Joe has continued to be more and more remote from his CT roots. He's "nowhere man" and has been since Nov. 06. The war has worsened and Joe' allegiance to W has tarnished him. He sold his home in New Haven (which was getting very hostile to him) and eventually deserted New Haven for Stamford (practically NY to me).

Joe so richly deserves his ignominy...

9. CTers for Lamont are totally above blame for what the rest of your state did to the rest of us.
Your eyes were wide open. It just boils my blood to know that the dolts who voted for Holy Joe are only just now summoning the brain power to raise their own lids. It's too fucking late for that, assholes. :grr:

11. You are right. Also, the local

party pretty much threw Lamont under the bus. Nobody, with the exception of Jepson openly supported him or spoke out in his favor. It was only very late in the campaign that Dodd finally did an ad with him. I think that had the local politicians whom a lot of voters also think highly of (like Blumenthal) etc. had openly campaigned for him and endorsed him it could have made a difference. As I recall, he lost by 4 points.

Also, Barbara Boxer didn't help matters coming here to campaign for Liberman. Ugh.

Maxine Waters, God bless her came and tried to help Lamont. But I think that the silence shown by the CT politicians was interpreted as support for Lieberman (which I think it was). I wonder how they are all feeling now...

4. There were many here that defended and praised Joe for his "liberal"
voting record. They claimed we should be focused on
defeating Republicans instead of "Democrats"...

I still say that we needed to get RID of the
snakes in our grass. We have, of course, been
proven correct.

Now we need to look at Florida:

WORSE THAN LIEBERMAN, BILL NELSON:

5. Bill Nelson's voting record is awful
But I think Joe still captures the Brass Ring by his clear intention to pull a Zell Miller. Say what you will about Nelson, and there's plenty to say, nobody's wondering if he will speak at the Republican Convention (unless I missed something).

15. Help me out here. Are you defending Nelson, or Republicans,
or both?

The subtle difference between
Nelson and a Repuglican DOES make it difficult
to tell the difference.

19. So you don't think Nelson would become a LOUD Republican...
if the good democrats of Florida crowbarred him out
of the Democratic Party, as the good democrats of
Connecticut did to Lieberman?
