I love opera!
Edited on Tue Apr-08-08 10:06 AM by cynatnite
I don't know much about it except that it's absolutely beautiful to watch and to listen to. I hope in my lifetime I will someday to get to see one.

I'll never understand why such wonderful music is considered to be snobbish or for latte drinking libs by some of the RW types. Some of these same folks think that tractor pulls and C&W music is the end all and be all of being American. Don't get me wrong I grew up on those things, but I also grew to love opera and classical music despite the fact that I'm not well educated on the subjects.

Folks like bush who look down on such great music and art just baffle me.

on edit: The opera 'Romeo and Juliet' is on PBS right now. Beautiful stuff.

1. I hope you'll get to see an opera live, too
If it helps at all, the Met simulcasts to movie theaters around the country. It's possible to see a live opera!

I went to my first opera last year. I've been listening to classical music since I was in high school.

It's my experience that the RW hates everything they don't understand, and the arts baffles them. They can't believe anyone would want to create anything besides war and death.

2. It just takes some getting used to, I guess.
The thing is, the "supertitles" in the live performances make it so accessible now. But the other thing is, live performances are SO expensive! But the other other thing is, it's never been easier to enjoy classical music at home as it is now.

I'm a 'classical' pianist, btw. :hi:

3. I'm a big Chopin fan...
It's what I listen to at night when I get the rare oppotunity to have the house to myself.

7. The Met performances simulcast at movie theaters
all over the country are $20 a seat. Yeah, it's more spendy than a movie, but a ticket to the Met is hundreds of dollars (at the least).

The simulcasts also have features like interviews and backstage stuff.

There is nothing like live opera, and I was pretty grateful for the supertitles. Even if you don't think you're going to like it, you may fall in love with it, like I did.

Just kidding.

I love opera, too.

Magic Flute
Barber of Seville
Marriage of Figaro
Carmen
Faust
Tales of Hoffmann

to name a few

5. I've been an opera fan since I was a teenager
The music is wonderful, but a good live performance adds an extra dimension.

I really don't think that liking/disliking opera has anything to do with political opinions, though. In my experience, anyway, some people, left and right, are captivated by opera, while others, also left and right, are left cold by it.

9. I found reading the first act ahead of time to be all I needed.

Once I understood who was who and what was what -- it was much easier to follow along and yet still be surprised at the ending.

My favorites that I've seen in person were Tosca, Eugene Onegin, and Don Giovani.
