1. This was discussed in last week's SFRC Iraq hearings --
They kind of went into what it involved -- it was interesting.

4. The troop "withdrawal" plan is blatantly political to give Republicans and advantage.
Petraeus' suggestion that troop withdrawals be scheduled for political advantage to to Republicans. As I understand it, the small troop "withdrawal" is scheduled for July -- keyed to diminish outrage over the war during the political conventions July and September. Then the 45 day review of the "withdrawal" is set for September right after the Republican convention. This is blatantly political timing.

If Democrats agree to this, they are handing the election to the Republicans once again. Get the troops out now. We have no business in Iraq. There are no WMDs. Al Qaeda's presence is very small, and besides, Al Qaeda came to Iraq after we invaded. What is more, if our presence in Iraq could get rid of Al Qaeda there, by this time, they would be gone. The only thing we can do at this time is to take sides in a civil war. Since all sides are either allies with Saudi Arabia (the Sunnis) or allies of Iran, what is our national interest. I think that if we ever had any national interest in Iraq, we certainly don't have any today. We need to get out and get out now.
