Heil Hitler!
Edited on Tue Apr-08-08 01:05 PM by lonestarnot
The modern torch relay was introduced by Carl Diem, president of the Organization Committee for the Berlin Games of 1936, as part of an effort to turn the games into a glorification of the Third Reich. The torch ceremony is still practiced as of 2008.

6. Actually, that was a German salute also used in the U.S. to pledge allegience to the flag.
The Nazis appropriated it, and after that it was in disrepute.

8. Wikipedia - it was called the Bellamy Salute
After the man who wrote our pledge of allegiance and "invented" the arm-extended salute to go with it (it actually goes back to ancient times). This form of the flag salute was practiced in America from the late 1800s until about 1942. There's a picture of American children giving the salute here:

Bellamy was a socialist; maybe that and the old salute (which Americans proudly displayed until the rise of the Third Reich) are part of the reason RWers erroneously tie Hitler to socialism.

3. This one sentence speaks wonders
Interestingly enough, Owens' general treatment in Germany was better than he had previously received in America, as he had no problem using public transportation or entering bars.

5. But their practice has not made perfect.
Unless you count riding a bus with a doused torch an example of perfection.
