UPDATED: 9:12 am EDT April 8, 2008

BOSTON -- The brewer of Samuel Adams beer is recalling selected bottles of beer after brewers in Cincinnati found grains of glass in bottles.

Boston Beer Co. said Monday that the recall comes after routine inspections found defects in 12-ounce beer bottles made by a third-party supplier. The grains or bits of glass could break off and possibly fall into the bottle.

Fewer than one in 100 of the bottles from the plant are believed to be defective.

The Sam Adams beers affected by the recall have a special marking on the base of the bottle. The marking has the letter "N" followed by the number 35, followed by the letters "OI."

Boston Beer said there are no reports of any injuries to consumers.

3. Oh no!
Actual good beer being recalled! Must be some sort of a conspiracy by the big breweries. Oh wait...never mind.

4. It was "contract" brewed...
... The brewery in Boston brews the quantity that Sam Adams puts out. I know of other micro-brews who have their beers brewed at other locations under contract. For instance, Brooklyn Brewery has most of its beers brewed in Utica, NY by FX Matt Brewing. The same people who bring you Utica Club, brew quality beers for Brooklyn, because they just do not have the capacity, or the distribution that the large brewers have. As a matter of fact, after further research, I have found that as of as of January, 1995 I have found that Sam Adams is brewed in the following locations, at these breweries:

Boston, MA
AKA Jamaica Plain. Former Haffenreffer brewery, a company-owned
facility brewing the Boston Ale and doing R&D work on other
recipes.
Pittsburgh, PA
Pittsburgh Brewing Co. brews the largest portion (by volume) of
Sam Adams beers, mostly lagers for eastern distribution.
Lehigh Valley, PA
Stroh Brewery Co. brews the ales for eastern distribution.
Portland, OR
Blitz-Weinhard Brewing Co. (owned by G. Heileman). Most Sam
Adams brews for western distribution.
Nagold, Germany
A Gambrinus brewery brews the Boston Lager for the European
market.

When you think about how they made 1.5 million barrels of beer last year (more than 47 million gallons) you will realize that contract brewing is the way that they have been able to grow their brand, and keep their quality. I hope that this will not adversely affect a good company, and good corporate citizen. I like their products, and I like the way that they conduct business. They should be an example to others.

FYI- I have been a home-brewer for about ten years, and was the vice president of the local homebrew club, and have a little knowledge of this business.

Enough of my drivel, I'm going to have a nice refreshing Sam Adams White Beer with lunch!

6. I love Sam Adams beer.
Octoberfest in the winter (what cold we have in Fl) and light in the summer.

I also tried Fezziwig for Christmas dinner and a cranberry type for Thanksgiving. They are all good.
