I swear, Republicans are just fucking idiots
I'm not talking Republicans from way back - I'm talking the ones who got their identities during the Reagan era. The supply siders. The neocons. The haters of the poor. Pro corporations and anti- union. Voters against their own best interests. The ones who show sympathy toward the very rich. Obsessed with Clinton's penis. Do I need to go on?

I showed one die-hard Republican here at work the Doonesbury comic from Sunday. I told her I had seen the research, and this was true. She said I got my sources from a Democratic website. I told her I would get the info to her from a non-biased source. Of course, she had to be sarcastic and go on about how "obviously perfect the Democrats were." I told her this was to dispell the lie about Dems being fiscally irresponsible and how Republicans were for less spending and smaller government. She said it "was just a comic." Just a comic? It was Doonesbury, I told her.

I told her the Republicans were responsible for the mess we were currently in. She said Democrats. I said Republicans. And we yelled the same thing at each other.

Her phone rang. She said "I'm through with you." I said something like "What was the price of gas when Bush entered office?" Again she said she was through with me again. I told her that I was right all along and she and the rest of the right wingers were wrong. And I left with a grin on my face.

I'm not going to change any minds around here. But this is really cathartic for me, and at this point I don't care if they hate me or not. They need this stuff shoved right in their faces. And it proves when confronted with the truth, wingers can't HANDLE THE TRUTH. Remember, facts are a liberal bias.

2. "when confronted with the truth, wingers can't HANDLE THE TRUTH" which is why
it is a waste of time to try and convince them with logic, facts, and the truth.

The effectiveness of the emotional appeals (abortion, gay rights, war) in drawing their votes is further proof that, for almost the entire group of rethugs, they are unsalvageable. How else to explain that they work and vote against their own interests?

Better to simply remove them from having any influence over policy. It would save a lot of time, effort and scarce resources.

3. Yep, emotional things like abortion
Supports the war and all, but at the same time identifies Dems as "baby killers." Pure emotion, and no logic.

11. Some liberals. I'm for responsible gun ownership
Even though I refuse to own or shoot one now. I was raised learning to use firearms.

12. Most of my liberal friends, when asked,
fully support a "firearms responsibility" course in high schools, not to promote guns, but to promote gun safety.

Only a few are against it, and only because they "don't like guns". Well, duh. But they're everywhere.

5. I ask them to "prove it' when they start spewing lies...normally that shuts them up
since they know they don't have any facts to back up what they are saying.

14. It's worse than that-- they don't seem to understand what proof is.
Edited on Wed Apr-09-08 10:15 AM by Marr
I've asked Conservatives to back up their claims as well, and I always get the same response. They'll toss out a slogan or an emotional appeal, and sincerely seem to think that they've proven their point. Real data is brushed aside without a second glance if it counters their claim.

These are people who just don't know how to reason. Belief comes first, and facts are only relevant if they support their belief.

I can see why religious fundamentalism seems to be so much more prevalent on the right. It trains a person to think this way. I think it explains the seeming 'anti-science' bent you see on the right as well.

It's a kind of 'anti-reason' movement.

6. The only sources they consider reliable are the RW Radio Hatemongers.

And that is because the Hatemongers tell the Kool-Aid drinkers to listen to ONLY them and no one else.

These poor idiots swollow the whole hook, line and sinker.

10. Ha! Believe it or not, she is actually a friend
See, where I'm from, I have to make accommodations. Just about everyone around here are like her, and I'd have to be a hermit and not speak to anyone if I shut out all these people.

Wait, maybe that wouldn't be a bad idea...

When I pointed out that it would be rather strange to murder 300 million people, all I got were Looks of Hate.

Fucking Idiots.. :)

18. Oh, update. I just got called on the carpet for being too "political"
Oh well, guarantee if I was using Bush talking points, I'd be okay.

BlueJazz, it would have been interesting to ask them "What would Jesus do?" Because I'm almost positive they probably are religious zealots to boot.

15. It does feel good
Shoving the truth at these dimbulbs who work so hard against their own interests feels so good. But one very inconvenient fact can do a lot more persuading than an hour's worth of shouting, and your question about the price of gas is one of those things that even the lizard brains understand. "Hey, it was only a buck-fifty for a gallon of gas back in 2001, and it's more than double that now." Wha hoppen?

As for the national debt, yes, well over 3/4 of it has been run up on the watch of Republicans. When your "friend" challenges your sources, tell her you'd be glad to consider any source she has. Your position, backed up by the government's own statistics, shows that of the $9 trillion in debt we're currently servicing, more than $7 trillion of it accumulated under presidents named Reagan and Bush. What's her counter? Can she demonstrate that our nation isn't awash in debt? Or that it didn't really accrue under the massive deficit spending of Presidents Reagan, Bush I and Bush II?

Two words that spell "con-be-gone": Prove it.

17. I was told a while back by a RW family member that gas is expensive
because of all the taxes Democrats have added to the price of a gallon. :eyes:

How exactly the Ds raised gas taxes by 300% without anyone noticing I was unable to figure out...

Six of those years the Republicans had control of EVERYTHING. When did the Dems find time to raise the gas tax in so little time? LOL!!!

21. Lee Raymond's $400 Million retirement package didn't come out of taxes.

Link: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/04/13/business/13exxon.html

He is the Exxon Mobil Chairman who retired with the biggest golden parachute EVER.

And that is because his company made the most profits of any company EVER.

And it was all done while the rethugs owned all branches of government.

23. I recommend Dr Bob Altemeyer's book ..
"The Authoritarians"..

Once you read the book you will have a lot better understanding of Authoritarian Followers and how they "think".

The book is free to read, print and distribute and is available online.

http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~altemey/

Don’t think for a minute this doesn’t concern you personally. Let me ask you, as we’re passing the time here, how many ordinary people do you think an evil authority would have to order to kill you before he found someone who would, unjustly, out of sheer obedience, just because the authority said to? What sort of person is most likely to follow such an order? What kind of official is most likely to give that order, if it suited his purposes? Look at what experiments tell us, as I did.

If, on the other hand, you’re way ahead of me, and believe the extreme right-wing elements in America are poised to take it over, permanently, I think you can still get a lot from this book. The studies explain so much about these people. Yes, the research shows they are very aggressive, but why are they so hostile? Yes, experiments show they are almost totally uninfluenced by reasoning and evidence, but why are they so dogmatic? Yes, studies show the Religious Right has more than its fair share of hypocrites, from top to bottom; but why are they two-faced, and how come one face never notices the other? Yes, their leaders can give the flimsiest of excuses and even outright lies about things they’ve done wrong, but why do the rank-and-file believe them? What happens when authoritarian followers find the authoritarian leaders they crave and start marching together?
