They COULD have found a welfare mother driving a Cadillac, you know
The problem is, when that welfare mother is driving a 1969 Cadillac in 1983, it's got 400,000 miles on it, the upholstery is shot, it's covered in rust and dents, and it needs a new engine, transmission, radiator, rear end, shocks, brakes and tires, it's not the Great American Luxury Car everyone thinks of when they hear the word "Cadillac."

It's just an old junker.

Just like Ronald Reagan was.

2. I lived in the projects in a moderate sized city in the early 80's
and there were plenty of people who lived there that drove new or nearly new cars, caddy's included. We had to ride the bus everywhere we went and pull a wagon to the grocery store to haul home our groceries.

3. According to my right wing relatives the welfare
queens drive those shiny new caddies right to the grocery store where they load their carts with steaks, lobsters, and caviar - paying, of course, with food stamps. Then, they take what's left of their welfare check and squander it on cigarettes, booze, and gambling.

The relatives spin these tales with a totally straight face, too. They are unapologetically racist. Most of what routinely comes out of their mouths I wouldn't reprint here, but it's bad. Reagan was responsible for widening the racial divide in this country and playing to people's worst instincts - and the media naturally never called him out.

8. Oh and the Coach handbag. My cousin once told me that
she routinely sees people on welfare with designer bags while she's toting her meager spare change in a K-Mart faux leather purse out of the bargain bin. Cue the violins.

13. If you know how to shop, it's completely doable
My wife went on one of her Purse Shopping Expeditions the other day (I won't go on one of these anymore...she will go to someplace like TJMaxx or Ross and fondle Every Fucking One of the 9000 purses they have on display) and came back with an, apparently genuine, Dooney & Bourke purse, which they tell me is one of the top brands.

$19.95. You can't get faux leather at Kmart THAT cheap.

6. That's not to mention all the babies they're popping out, too...
Ten or twelve per mom...all with different daddies to hear them tell it.

10. Oh, absolutely. Each kid apparently represents a
fatter check, so the more the merrier.

7. I was a welfare social worker
in the 90's. Never meet a welfare "queen"! Heard about them from my right wing relatives, if course, they didn't work with me, they only had their preconcieved notions. There is fraud in the system, but not enough to pay for a shiny new car. As a matter of fact, I had a few that bought new cars, or fairly new, and they were disqualified from food stamps, because it pushed them over the resource limit.

When I was working in the system, they could get a new car if they have a disabled child and it didn't count against them. I don't know about now. I had a family with a child in a wheelchair, they were donated a van. Some in the community talked about it. It was infuriating. The van was donated for their child so that they could get him around.

9. Or find someone who had bought the food stamps for 30 cents on the dollar

the rate in the late 80s and drove whatever car they were driving. Before they went to the swipe card many people bought food stamps from folks who needed cash instead of food stamps.

11. The things that food stamps don't cover...
Diapers
Toilet paper
laundry soap
body soap
shoes

and so on...

My daughter used to be on food stamps and had three kids. She complained she could buy unhealthy food like chips and candy, but couldn't get diapers for her baby.

She's not on them anymore, but it's still a sore issue with her. She says it's criminal that folks on welfare aren't done better.

12. When I worked in a grocery store in the 90's
it was around holiday time. I looked over to the next cashier from me and there were 3 or 4 women dressed in office wear, getting checked out a boat load of food. There was just deli platters, chips, dips and lots of other things to numerous to mention. It was obviously for a party. Here was the kicker, one of them pulled out a stack about 6 inches high of food stamp books. If I hadn't been working, I would have gone over there and given them hell. With the food stamps they spent on that party, a single mom could have had food for 6 months. I was pissed, and still am.
