It's official, the place that fired me Feb 22 last year just promoted me

I was fired illegally last year. In a case of retaliation against me for filing ADA charges with the EEOC, I was fired for something silly. My union was in the process of taking my case to binding arbitration as per our contract. Four days before the hearing, a settlement was reached with back pay and benefits.

As soon as I recover from my on the job injury (Dec 17th) and surgery, I'll start my promotion. I won't be a semi-skilled labor anymore. I'll be a licensed plant operator. They have to train me to get the license. With my seniority I'll have day shift. There will be overtime as we have to man the plant 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I'll be making more than some foreman in the plant. :-)

I know many DUers are having hard times with the economy. Here's to things looking up for them very soon. Like after W leaves office. I hope the door hits him on the ass on the way out too.

3. Watch. The bastards will close the plant and you'll be laid off.
Then Mitt Romney will come in, buy the corporation, break it up into chunks, raid the pension fund, and leave you holding the bag.

Only KEEEEEEEDING.... well, maybe not. No, no... only KEEEEDING.

Seriously, congratulations. Hope everything is on an upward trajectory for you henceforth.

Please don't let your union posting slide. I think that is selfish of me but they are very clickable.

Congratulations

14. You don't appreciate unions until you need them!
Edited on Wed Apr-09-08 11:17 AM by Sancho
I worked for years in non-union positions. I never thought much about it. When I moved to Florida, the job happened to be represented by a union. Again, I didn't pay much attention and rarely participated in anything. I simply voted when collective contracts were negotiated. After 10 years at the same job, we inherited an abusive and literally crazy administrator (probably dumped on us because someone knew he was trouble). He harassed and fired and abused employees (mostly the women). Two filed grievances and two others filed lawsuits. A bunch of folks were fired on the spot.

All of the employees won various settlements, promotions, and legal fees. The bad guy is gone now. The experienced and supportive union members and lawyers made all the difference in a really tough situation. Otherwise, just about everyone would have been on the street looking for a job. The union folks also anticipated retaliation and were prepared when those who gave depositions were attacked after the dust settled.

Given a choice, I'd rather pay the union dues and deal with union politics any day rather than lose the support.

23. My surgery was Friday March 21st and was successful

Had I known how bad the first 24 hours after it were going to be, I would have spent the night there. It was awful. In the middle of an almost sleepless night I had a reaction to one of the meds. Itched everywhere. Woke up at 5 A.M. with a bad cramp in the arm I couldn't move as it was in a sling. Decided to get up. That night let's just say the meds locked up my intestines. Yada, yada, yada. By that Monday I was in great shape. They didn't have to do my rotator cuff. So I'm really doing great. I did have a set back, but I'm getting better. Back to work on sedentary duty Monday the 14th. I see the doctor again on the 28th.

I thank everyone for the good wishes and kindness. Send some over to GDP too. :-)
