what in the hell is wrong with maureen dowd? when did she become so stupid?
I read her column in the nyt this morning and nearly choked on my coffee: iraq is a WARD of the US? she likes the restrained competence of betrayus? we're spending three trillion of our own money so iran can have a dysfunctional little friend?

Toil and Trouble

By MAUREEN DOWD
Published: April 9, 2008

Maybe it was because I was sitting in the back of the Senate chamber with three war protesters — grim-faced, chanting women dressed in black hooded cloaks, white makeup and blood-red hands — that I felt as though I were watching a production of “Macbeth” rather than a hearing on Iraq.

“Fair is foul, and foul is fair,” the witches in the play said. “Hover through the fog and filthy air.”

Many words hovered Tuesday in the Senate — including some pointed ones by the woman and two men vying to be commander in chief. But the words seemed trapped in a labyrinth leading nowhere.

The Surge Twins were back, but the daylong testimony of David Petraeus and Ryan Crocker before two committees seemed more depressing this time. As the Bard writes in “Macbeth”: “From that spring whence comfort seemed to come, discomfort swells.”

They arrived on the heels of the Maliki debacle in Basra, which made it stunningly clear — after a cease-fire was brokered in Iran — that we’re spending $3 trillion as our own economy goes off a cliff so that Iran can have a dysfunctional little friend.

Not good news, given Ahmadinejad’s announcement that his scientists are putting 6,000 new uranium-enriching centrifuges in place.

I like General Petraeus’s air of restrained competence and Ambassador Crocker’s air of wry world-weariness. But now they seem swallowed up by the fresh violence and ancient tribal antagonisms that they were supposed to be overcoming.

. . . . .

1. I don't read her regularly but the "I like" part sounds facetious
She does refer to them (condescendingly) as the "Surge Twins" after all ...

4. When wasn't she stupid?
Next to Tweety, Timmy and Sally Quinn, she was one of Media Whores Online's prime targets. I was annoyed when many here jumped onto her bandwagon when she started bashing * - I wasn't buying any of it, she's still a tool.

Oh! But ain't she cute? :sarcasm:

5. Dowd was a Republican strategist in 2000
She was one of the pundit cheerleaders that derided Gore constantly and ignored Bush's greatest faults.

Dowd is a Dud.

6. What would you have General Petreaus do??
He has been ordered to carry out a mission by his constitutional commander in chief.

I give him the benefit of the doubt that he is doing so to the best of his ability.

I no doubt bet that many on DU would rather have him resign in a huff bad mouthing Bush all the way out the door.

That is almost never done by a military man, from the academy on they are trained to obey their commanders and to try to execute orders to the best of their abilities.

I ask you would you really have it any other way??

No the real bad guy in this whole mess is the current elected CIC (might have been selected in 2000, but was outright elected in 04, Ohio not withstanding).

We need some perspective here and whole lot less anger.

Are we frustrated by the situation. YOU BET.

can you make a case that we were dragged into Iraq in way that could require impeachment?? Possibly

But we all know that this late date impeachment is not going to happen, and any way you can not (although I may be wrong about this) impeach both the POTUS and the VPOTUS at the same time, so it is a moot issue.

We need to do the best we can until a Democrat takes the oath of office on Jan 20,09.

13. were you directing the question about betrayus to me? I was talking
about the WHOLE column, in case you didn't notice.

what would I have betrayus do? guess what? I would NOT have him act like a political shill. if he KNOWS that is what he is doing, he should retire, really quite simple. otherwise, he is betraying his oath and his country, just as colin powell did.

I have no respect for either of them.

14. A general officer who parrots Bush talking points to Congress
does not deserve my respect. There's a perspective for you.

The way he's "pacified" Iraq is via bribery and arming the friendliest factions.

Remember how well that worked out in Afghanistan?

16. He could do what many, many of the generals
in this fiasco have done.....tell the truth and quit.....or quit and tell the truth. But when you play along with the boys in the sandbox, you are just as complicit.

10. She seems to veer off at times in some very strange directions
with her opinions. I think it's because she wants to show herself as an independent thinker, but it fact it shows her to be rather shallow and often uninformed in her views.

11. I read it differently
I think Maureen Dowd, who is quite intelligent, used the words "ward" and "dysfunctional little friend" intentionally in a way critical of and demeaning to the Bush administration, who treat Iraq as a ward of the U.S. It's consistent with her withering put down of the neo cons and how they've screwed the pooch in Iraq.

How she continues to keep a prime gig like NYTimes columnist, well, I won't speculate.
