How to lose votes in the general population
Just be a fairly well know Democrat senator and state that Senator McCain who was a young naval officer doing his duty in a war he had nothing to do with starting and the son of an admiral and the grand son of another one.

State that in effect he dropped bombs and did not give a damm where they landed or what damage they did, forgetting the fact that those he bombed shot back and would eventually down him and cause him to lose 5 years of his life in a POW camp.

Then just for good measure call him a war monger at any an every opportunity.

Folks this is not the way to get it done.

Thank God that Obama has the correct approach, he always ALWAYS! pays homage to McCain's service to his nation, after which he shows in very clear and positive terms where he is wrong on the issues across the board.

With the for lack of a better word hate approach we enable the GOP to stereo type us and then pigeon hole us no matter how many times we claim to support the troops.

With Baracks approach we gain voters.

Think about it.

1. Lionel on AAR and Media Matters have been talking about HOW to talk about
McCain's war record. That was either Monday or Tuesday this week.

4. My mistake for which I apologize
BTW: thank you all for your overall positive take on my comments.

I sort of expected to be raked over the coals some what for my take.

I really do believe that belittling McCain about anything doing with his military service will cost us much more than anything we could gain.:yourock:

12. What did belittling Kerry's service cost the GOP?
I happen to disagree with you. It is supposed to be his Strong suit and he is very vulnerable there. Military Service is not off the table as far as I am concerned...America just needs to get off it's War Monger kick...starting with McCain...

13. Kerry took it in the shorts due to his
inability to counter the assault by the Swift Boaters in a quick and decisive manner and that made him look to a fashion ineffectual.

Also for the most part major viet-nam era anti-war types make real questionable candidates.

He was out in front in his anti-war views (his genghis kahn comment, and winter soldier comments for example).

This back ground trumped the rest of stellar service as a congressman/senator.

That IMHO opinion is why the GOP was able to mount a sustained attack on his military credentials.

I guarantee you if we try the same tactic on McCain it will boomerang on us.

McCain was held in a POW camp for 5 years and refused to be sent home as a propaganda prize.

Kerry's service while commanding respect pails in comparison.

I seriously believe that this is a road we should not go down.

It is too easy to use other more helpful approaches to beat him.

Just my 2 cents.

Just for my own knowledge (and being a vet of 17 years), is there ever a reason for the US to consider defending our selves or are we always war mongers (and I stipulate that in the case of Iraq I agree with you)??

14. We haven't actually had to defend ourselves since WW II
All the other "wars" have been for political reasons and yes that means killing for Profit...What does the Constitution say about maintaining a standing army?

then someone is going to have to give up a piece of their pie so that someone else can have more." -Michelle Obama

8. I completely agree with that!!
What I do not see is what arguing for that has to do with a chunk of the Democratic party trashing McCain's overall military service.

Look in a good world McCain would be allowed to live out the years left to him in comfort on his USN pension (150k a year should be about good enough for most people) in Arizona.

He should never be allowed to come within 10k miles of being president (of course no Repub should), we just need to do this in a more classy way, and my point is that Barack Obama seems to get this and I believe that is big plus for our party.
