"The Secret Government", Bill Moyers Documentary from 1987

Just came across the links to this PBS documentary from 1987 on a behind the scenes, secret government organizing black ops, coups, assassinations etc. as Bill says, "outside the legitimate institutions of goverment" and contrary to the US constitution. Why "gasp" it sounds almost like a "conspiracy".

Another documentary now available on Google Video is the 3 part BBC documentary on Operation Gladio. Gladio was The NATO/CIA led operation in Italy and other West European countries which organized secret armies to stay behind enemy lines in the event of a Soviet invasion of Europe to engage the enemy in guerrilla warfare. However, in some European countries (e.g. Italy) these secret armies worked in close cooperation with fascist and underground far right forces under the protection of the local security services to stage murderous terror attacks on civilians. These terror attacks were then blamed by governments and media on left wing radical and communist subversives. The idea was to discredit the left and left leaning politicians, and in the words of one of the Operation Gladio participants Vincenzo Vincinguerra, "to force the public to turn to the state to ask for greater security." NATO's Secret Army: Operation Gladio and Terrorism in Western Europe by Danile Ganser

The CIA and the British secret service MI6, in collaboration with the military alliance NATO and European military secret services set up a network of clandestine anticommunist armies in Western Europe after World War II. The secret soldiers were trained on remote islands in the Mediterranean and in unorthodox warfare centers in England and in the United States by the Green Berets and SAS Special Forces. The network was armed with explosives, machine guns and high-tech communication equipment hidden in underground bunkers and secret arms caches in forests and mountain meadows. November 1990) and observed that "The story seems straight from the pages of a political thriller." (The Times, November 19, 1990). Ever since, so-called 'stay-behind' armies of NATO have also been discovered in France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxemburg, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Austria, Greece and Turkey. They were internationally coordinated by the Pentagon and NATO and had their last known meeting in the NATO-linked Allied Clandestine Committee (ACC) in Brussels in October 1990.

I would like to think we learned the lesson, but I really doubt it. This latest bunch of war criminals will go free and unpunished just like their Iran Contra predecessors.

11. Yup, Prescott Bush was probably one of those positive thinking types.

If at first you don't succeed, try and try again. If he couldn't get his fascist conspiracy to stage a coup and takeover the government to succeed, just past the torch on to his kids and grandkids and let them have another go 'round at it. This time it's starting to look like they might get away with it.

13. BBC Newsnight discovers photos of CIA operatives at the RFK assassination.

CIA role claim in Kennedy killing

New video and photographic evidence that puts three senior CIA operatives at the scene of Robert Kennedy's assassination has been brought to light.

The evidence is a result of a three year investigation

The evidence was shown in a report by Shane O'Sullivan, broadcast on BBC Newsnight.

It reveals that the operatives and four unidentified associates were at the Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles in the moments before and after the shooting on 5 June, 1968.

The CIA had no domestic jurisdiction and some of the officers were based in South-East Asia at the time, with no reason to be in Los Angeles.

Three of these men have been positively identified as senior officers who worked together in 1963 at JMWAVE, the CIA's Miami base for its Secret War on Castro.

David Morales was Chief of Operations and once told friends:

"I was in Dallas when we got the son of a bitch and I was in Los Angeles when we got the little bastard."

Gordon Campbell was Chief of Maritime Operations and George Joannides was Chief of Psychological Warfare Operations.

Joannides was called out of retirement in 1978 to act as the CIA liaison to the Congressional investigation into the JFK assassination. Now, we see him at the Ambassador Hotel the night a second Kennedy is assassinated.

truly required viewing - I can think of nothing else that introduces the national security state, its history and inherent tendency to crime, and the contradiction between secret power and the republican or democratic conceptions of government.
