Cockfighting still prevalent, FBI agent says

NASHVILLE - An FBI agent told a state Senate committee Tuesday that cockfighting remains relatively common across Tennessee even after undercover operations that led to multiple arrests and the closing of two major operations in Cocke County.

Thomas E. Farrow, a Johnson City-based agent who supervised the Cocke County operation known as "Rose Thorn," said there are "still quite a few pits" operating in Tennessee, "pretty much throughout" the state.

Beyond the large, somewhat organized cockfighting pits, he said there are smaller and more informal "hack fights" that amount to "a circle of pickup trucks and bails of hay."

Farrow spoke to the Senate Judiciary Committee, which afterward unanimously approved legislation that would make cockfighting a felony in Tennessee as it is now in 37 other states.
