It is never too late to give up your prejudices |
|
Henry David Thoreau
This seems like a simple, short statement, but it caused me to think. What are my prejudices? Am I prejudiced against people who I perceive don't think like me? Don't look like me? Eat with their left hands? Wear their hair and clothes differently? Work at jobs I don't approve of?
I work on giving up prejudices every day of my life. I'm sure most of you out there do also, but it's nice to be reminded every now and again to think about where we are currently. For me, anyway.

1. I am VERY prejudiced - and it isn't going to change |

Anyone who puts a "W" or "W 04" on their car is a fucking asshat who will NEVER be invited to my home for any reason whatsoever.
I had a home nurse show up in a car with a "W" sticker on it. She was strongly encouraged to arrange for someone else at the service to come from then on. I don't want someone that idiotic to have anything to do with my health and wellbeing.

2. I don't like BMW drivers ... |
|
They sit smugly in their little cars and act like they own the road.
Just try to make me give up that prejudice ....

4. One of the most charitable people I ever met |

was a German woman in the US who drove a BMW. Germans sometimes appear to be smug, but not really if you tickle them!

...is , basically, pre-judging. Everybody does it: it's natural. We also discriminate, constantly. Part of growing as a person is learning how to do it more effectively, and practically. I don't think it can ever be done perfectly, but it is good to at least try to improve.
