Poll question: Economical Breaking Point
Do you believe we are close to the economical breaking point here in the US? Have you been foreclosed on, know someone who has, or do you know people who are going hungry? Do you believe we are close to a total breaking point?

1. In the last 10 years, I and millions of others, have been reduced to making less
than half of what I used to pay in taxes.

There are a series of catastrophes coming, like a tsunami. Are you heading for the beach to watch?

4. Yes -- making less
with costs more than doubling? Tripling?

America -- I NEVER thought I'd see the day.

And those who haven't been affected yet, will be.

2. I am seriously concerned about how much longer
people can handle the poor economy. Every day I meet more and more people who are seriously struggling and who are becoming desperate for money and food. I believe many cannot survive this much longer.

6. If I hadn't inherited money from my aunt's death last year
I would be homeless.

Pretty sick state of affairs, when the only certain way you can get money anymore is for a loved one to die.

Welcome to the Bush economy.

11. My situation is similar to yours.

Yep, about the only way you can get money is through inheritance. Or be the one in umpteen million who wins the lottery.

8. Then you are very lucky.
I think the 10% of the populations of Ohio and 19% in Michigan who have to depend on Food Stamps would kind of disagree with you.

Very happy to hear your world is Rose-Colored and Enchanted, but the economy as a whole is OK?

Not a chance.

And if you are one of the lucky one's to be unaffected, I hope you will help those around you who are less fortunate when you can.

This will not be a normal Recession.

10. In Ohio the average person on food stamps only receives 22.25 per week
and there are many not eligible. I cannot imagine only spending 22 dollars per week on groceries.

12. Other
I'm fine, and my immediate family is "ok". I'm worried about other Americans, who are sliding into poverty, or unable to get out of it, and about people on the rest of the planet, who are fighting (rioting) over food.

13. If energy isn't cheap, then yes
If energy is cheap, then no. We won't have much of a habitat if energy is cheap, but the economy will be fine.

14. The Collapse Of The Consumer Culture
This morning, the corner gas station was charging $3.60 a gallon...well over $1 higher than a year ago and over triple what it was when this regime took power. Other prices have gone up accordingly and with it the shrinking of "discretionary spending"...or money available for consumer goods.

I don't know many who aren't chosing food and necessities over buying a digital TV or taking a nice vacation. The retail world is taking a big hit as even "always the lowest prices" isn't low enough and inventories are not replenished...meaning new products aren't being made, shipped or sold. Deserted strip malls ripple in less need for inventory and cost cutting...fewer jobs that means even fewer dollars in the consumer pool. We're learning to made do with what we need...not what we want.

While I don't know people going hungry...I have seen homeless and know many who are suffering. We're not seeing massive bread lines or a booming black market...yet, but there's no doubt that the days of impulse buying are over.
