On the Colbert Report tonight, the guest was pushing for the demise of the penny. Among all the reasons he offered (the cost of the metal being the most reasonable reason to me), he kept coming back to the time saved at the checkout counter when pennies are not used. He gave the example of the little old lady fumbling through her purse searching for the right number of pennies.

I am that little old lady. I admit it. And I want to keep my pennies! (And get off of my lawn, you young whippersnapper!)

If Great Britain could agree to decimal money and replace the one pound note with a cleverly light coin, why can't we simply dump the two silliest cash things we have?

6. Have you seen their new coin design?

Beyond the absurdity of the design (the royal coat of arms, divided between the coins) they've removed the numeric value (the 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50) and left only the written designation (ten pence, fifty pence, etc) AND left the two pound coin the same as it was . . . so much for consistency. To top it off, they no longer have a coin that celebrates Wales (the old 2p coin does this) because the four quarters of the arms only show England, Scotland, Ireland, and England (again).

They ugly, not iconic, and people unfamiliar with the coinage will be cursing the Royal Mint out loud as they try to figure out which damn coin is which, as they struggle to read the tiny print.
