Ameircan Airlines "Copperizes" Planes... |
|
Edited on Thu Apr-10-08 02:03 PM by LeftHander
Executives looking for quick easy cash have grounded 900 planes and began stripping copper wire from them. "With copper at a all time high we're sitting on some easy cash. It seems counter productive but it sure beats hauling around potential terrorists, but we've run the numbers and it looks good." Stated American Airlines operations chief Morton Bellows.

I assume this post is parody, but the airlines really *ARE* trying to lighten planes by any reasonable means and yes, that includes stripping out from each plane as many miles of heavy copper wire as they can. When you think of how modern multiplexed control systems can do some very fancy stuff over a (say) single twisted pair of wires, you can realize some *BIG* savings by ripping out a heavy bundle of many wires and replacing them with just a few wires carrying high-tech signals (such as Ethernet or LonBus).
The in-seat audio, video, and other passenger controls is an obvious area to do this.

11. Wherever possible, yes. More bandwidth, lighter weight, no "short-circuit" fire risk. (NT) |
