Speier becomes Congress' newest member, is booed by Republicans
Zachary Coile, Chronicle Washington Bureau

Thursday, April 10, 2008

(04-10) 11:45 PDT Washington - --

Newly elected Democratic Rep. Jackie Speier of Hillsborough was sworn into Congress this morning and delivered a fiery speech criticizing President Bush's Iraq policy that led some Republicans to boo and walk out of the House chamber.

Speier, who won a special election Tuesday to fill the seat of the late Rep. Tom Lantos, was always an outspoken lawmaker in her years as a San Mateo County supervisor, state Assemblywoman and state Senator. She served notice Thursday that she plans be just as aggressive as a member of the House.

"The process to bring the troops home must begin immediately," Speier told fellow lawmakers including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco. "The president wants to stay the course and a man who wants to replace him suggests we could be in Iraq for 100 years. But Madam Speaker, history will not judge us kindly if we sacrifice four generations of Americans because of the folly of one."

While Democrats applauded, Republicans began a chorus of low boos. Some Republicans who had congratulated her just moments before, including Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Vista (San Diego County), walked out of the hall in protest.

Speier's 13-year-old daughter, who was watching from the House gallery, asked, "Why are they booing my mom?"

Let bygones be bygones. It's time to heal. All that crap.

What we should do is expose every evil fucking move of these evil fucking bastards until people are too embarrassed to even admit that their uncle Bob once voted for a republican sheriff.

one of the good ones. I have a lot of respect for her.

She has a very interesting history -- she was with the CA Congressman when he was killed at the airfield outside at Jonestown after visiting Jim Jones. It was a real hairy story of survival.

(11-13) 04:00 PDT SAN MATEO -- On Wednesday it will be 20 years since Jackie Speier was badly wounded in the Port Kaituma airstrip ambush that preceded the Jonestown massacre.

"I was very lucky," she said.

"I was shot five times and still have two bullets in my body. I could easily have been shot dead."

The newly elected state senator from San Mateo's Eighth District spent more than an hour detailing her feelings about the Guyana tragedy, in which five people were murdered in an ambush and Jim Jones and 912 followers died in a mass suicide.

Speier, 48, was then the legal aide to Rep. Leo J. Ryan, D-San Mateo, who had won congressional authorization to investigate charges that the Jonestown colony had become a jungle concentration camp ruled by a madman, and that the lives of nearly a thousand Americans were in danger.

...snip

"I was lying on the ground by one of the plane's wheels, pretending to be dead," Speier said. "I had my head on my arm, but I was one of the people they targeted, and was shot five times in the shoulder and right side by guys with rifles and shotguns.

"I went into shock. My mind rejected what had happened. Once I comprehended it I thought, `I never expected to die at such an early age -- I was 28 at the time. Would my parents ever know?' And then I waited for the lights to go out."

6. Good for Speier
Glad to see her moving up. She's been a local fixture in politics for a LONG time. She gained "fame" after being shot five times in Jonestown, Guyana. She was working for Rep. Leo Ryan, who was murdered there.

Now she holds his seat.

9. "Why are they booing my mom?"
Because, youngster, unlike all those macho Republican men, Jackie Speier has actually come under fire and doesn't think other people need to be shot at. These Republican men are true believers in the High Church of Redemptive Violence, and they think that might - and only might - makes right. Your mom is telling them something different, and their tiny little brains can't process the data.

So they boo.

I don't understand a congresswoman having an ignorant 13 year old. How could a responsible parent not take the time to educate her Freshman daughter about what to expect and what politics are and how it will be presented and what she will have to bear regarding her mother's choice of profession and her mother's choice to be strong and inflammatory (both of which I think are great) in the ways her mother presents her POVs.

I could understand the daughter's ignorance if she was say under the age of ten, but 13?!?!? That seems pretty irresponsible to me.

39. Why do you think she asked out of ignorance?
It could easily be rhetorical. As in, "Why are they booing my mom - she's RIGHT!" It's the same as when I ask how anyone can still support this moron of a president. I know the answer and I'm not asking out of ignorance. I'm making a point.

50. No, actually it bothered me a great deal that it was possible for an obviously
valuable woman to the party would perhaps have let her daughter down in such a way. However it was pointed out that the "why" question may have been rhetorical, and I quickly embraced that possibility. However, it is very discouraging that you are apparently illiterate and/or choose to imagine that no democratic representative can be questioned in the least. How republican of you.
