Maybe it's good that we now have 3 progressive radio networks...
...which each have a decent chance of success.

"Air America" has the big brand name.

"Nova M" has Mike Malloy and Randi Rhodes.

"Jones" has Ed Schultz and Stephanie Miller.

10. Ed has gotten a LOT better over the past few years...
He originally came across as just-slightly-left-of-center, but he's moved steadily in a progressive direction since then.

12. Jones older than dirt, but they're the ones who syndicate big eddie
and Big momma (Ed Shultz and Stephanie Miller)

Many folks don't realize this since they are carried by many of the stations that also carry AAR and Nova M programing

Hell, Nova M carries AAR, but you can bet your sweet toots that AAR in NYC will not carry Nova programing, given they ahem, pushed out some of their talent

13. Jones Radio Networks®, Inc. (JRN) is America's leading independent radio programming company
A subsidiary of Jones Media Group®, Ltd. (JMG), Jones Radio Networks®, Inc. (JRN) is America's leading independent radio programming company with offices and production studios in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Seattle, Denver, Nashville, and Florida. Through its subsidiaries, the company serves over 5,000 radio stations with a full menu of radio programming and services.

JRN began as a 24-Hour music format company serving commercial radio stations. We're now the largest provider of satellite-delivered live formats. In 1999, we acquired Broadcast Programming, the leading station-by-station music programming and consulting company. We're now one company, with operations in New York City, Denver and Seattle. Jones MediaAmerica, the largest independent network advertising sales company, based in New York, American Comedy Network, the leading producer of radio comedy features and materials, based in Milford, Connecticut, and JonesTM, which creates, produces and distributes music-based products for broadcast media use, are also JMG companies.

14. I'm thinking that AAR is gonna move away from the 'progressive' label.
They're going to become the middle-of-the-road 'slightly kinda almost liberal' network.

And like the man once said - 'Ain't nothin' in the middle of the road 'cept roadkill.'

19. 3 Very Weak Ones
Of the three Jones is in the best position as it has a corporate owner that is subsidizing this format with others, but it's never expanded to a full 24/7 network.

AAR's on its last legs. The Greens saved it from going under last year and little has been done to improve or expand the "big brand name"...and now with both Franken and Rhodes gone the only one left if Rachael Maddow...and I think her future is more at NBC than at AAR.

Then there's NovaM that needs listener support to stay operational and hopes to pick up where AAR falls. Again, they have no real assets or platform for growth. Unfortunately, fortunes haven't been made with a small radio station in Phoenix.

Progressive radio is very splintered and poorly funded and organized. There needs to be a better structure of financing, marketing and plans to combine both national with local programming...where a format can take root and gain an audience.
