Who wants out?
Anybody want to leave this country?

Anybody with plans to do so? Tell us about them.

I know several DUers are and/or have become expats.

1. I'm waiting to finish the current round of surgeries
on my transplanted cornea. When my vision gets as good as it will be, I plan to start a search in Mexico with the eventual aim of living there permanently.

I have given up hope that this country will ever deal fairly with its citizens on multiple issues, especially health care.

2. I'm going.
Costa Rica (Dominical).

But I am not quite ready, for I am having too much fun right now.

We have the land and the houses are built.

But I am not quite ready.

And I live in one of the coolest places in the US, anyway.

3. I\'m good, more or less...
Seems like a good place to jump in!

I\'m good. More or less...

I\'m not wild about what\\\'s happened, but I believe in the process and i think in the end, it will work.

I\'ve traveled extensively and while I think there are some really beautiful places in this world, I like this form of Government... not so much the current democracy, but the original Republic.

Plus, I gots family here... lol

and then there's deciding where to go and how to get there, and would I ever want to come back (ie how much concern with getting proper passports and such or just drive across the border never to return). It seems to be easier to think about than to do.

9. If I could afford it, I'd have left long ago. Emigration isn't an inexpensive activity
But having little to lose will make leaving that much easier. I'll be gone, with the first wave of refugees.

10. I'm scared to death of this government. Not the cowering
fear but the smart fear - survival fear.

I want to get out of here so bad but I just don't have the resources. If I were single with no family, my footsteps would still be smokin' across the southern border.

11. I've been tempted to do so for the last several years, but can't afford it.
At this point, I'm hoping President Obama will change my mind, and that the damage of the last 28 years is still undoable.

12. The Wife and I
Have been talking about it for a few years now. We've looked into a number of countries. At this point we have so much debt we dont really have many options in general though.

My Father was born in Germany so I could easily emmigrate there, but I have some wierd feelings about it. I know you can't blame the children of the Nazis for what their parents did, but still moving there would be wierd. We could move to England if I can break 80k a year... which will likely not happen anytime soon! We looked into Costa Rica, but apparently theres SOOOOO many expats down there that it's getting all wierd and expensive... also few white collar jobs and we've been trained our whole lives to be paper pushers.

At this point we're just trying to fix up our house so we can get out of it in a couple of years and move to Boston. We've never lived in a liberal city before. Always the oddball surrounded by snarling drooling biblebashing republicans. If you can't leave at least you can move somewhere cooler than where you are that has labor laws and public transportaion :P

Can I retire to the coast of Costa Rica with Salma Hayek?

If not, I think I'll stick around here a while longer. Family, kids, job, etc.

16. Been thinking about it for a while.
My father's father was born in Italy. So if I can convice my father to get citizenship I will probably be able to. But he's been estranged from me for most of my life, so it won't be an easy request for me to make.

I work for an international company, who has offices around the globe. If McCain becomes president, I'll be gone before inauguration. Maybe I can get a transfer to one of our Canadian or European offices.

18. Gotta see what happens in November.
The trouble is -- if McCain wins, leaving the country may not be enough.

And we don't have a real human space program anymore -- just up to LEO. That's just not far enough, if there's a Prez McCain.

On the other hand, upon retirement, I'm thinking of a move to a country with a lower cost of living -- assuming the world economy, or the world, hasn't been destroyed by then.

23. Ditto.
About going to Canada, not about the Scots-Canadian part.

I actually did serious investigation about moving to Canada the second time Bush was "elected", and found out that not only is it difficult for an immigrant to get a job there, the cost of the move itself is prohibitive. But I haven't completely given up; my faith in America is shot, and if my financial circumstances ever improve, I'm off to Toronto.

If it's Obama, then I plan on staying.

that I'd be interested in living in, especially after the age of 40.

But if a younger person asked me for advice, I'd say, "Go for it." At the very least, I'd advise a younger person to take advantage of opportunities to live overseas, even for a short time, especially if it's an opportunity to live among the locals and not on a U.S. military base or among a group of college students whose only motivation for traveling abroad is getting drunk in a new location.

I had opportunities to move to Japan, Norway, and Australia earlier in life, and I didn't take them, for what seemed like good reasons at the time but in retrospect maybe weren't so important.

24. We have been trying to set up retirement options in Panama
but have had difficulty with American crook developers. We do have bank accounts established and
have obtained permanent resident visas for both hubby and me in Panama.

It remains to be seen whether we can successfully close on a place to live, though.

27. After Nov. 2004 we looked into moving to Belize
But due to various health issues did not. The other reason we didn't is that I would want to live in the highlands of Belize but there are some strange religious sects in that part of the country. :eyes:

I'd rather stay here and help with the Second American Revolution to bring back the USA that my ancestors fought to free from the British.
