The Warfare State
by Fred J. Cook

"The pressures of post-World War II have created in America a new phenomenon, a power complex which may be aptly called the Warfare State. It is a conjunction of military-industrial power, against which President Eisenhower warned in his Farewell Address. Fed by ever increasing billions of dollars, the Warfare State rests upon two assumptions: that safety can be achieved only through power, that prosperity depends upon the constant pump-priming of the domestic economy through the expenditure of military billions. Both assumptions are false. Power in the nuclear age has become self-defeating and suicidal. Full employment and prosperity can no longer be guaranteed by military expenditures, for experience proves that vast sums spent for military hardware act in the long run only as a drug and a drag on the over-all economy. But both myths, aided by the lobbying of the military- industrial complex, persist in influencing American decisions and preventing them from being based on clear conceptions of reality."

1. Well, several DUers have informed us that this is untrue and there is no such thing as
a cabal of profiteers influencing our nation's politics and governance.

So Eisenhower, Butler, MLK, Kerry, Gonzalez, Parry, Webb, and anyone else warning of our government's actions against the citizenry are really just 'conspiracy theory nuts' just as BushInc says.

6. Hey J Edgar pretty much said organized crime was a fantasy when he testified. Of course, now we know
why he said it, the mob had all those pictures of Hoover in his 'other' persona - Mary.

7. i recently shifted my conceptual framework, when talking about this stuff, to focusing
on the "organized crime" part of the equation. at least, when talking to normal people who aren't already wondering about this stuff. following the money ("cui bono") seems to turn down the heat and turn on the light.

8. Really? I missed those guys who deny it.
Well, conspiracies happen, thus there are laws that recognize them. When a single family runs through the connective tissue of events that are bad for the constitution and the rule of law, I for one become suspicious.

5. It was probably in the planning stages during the War
And the financial infrastructure for it had already been created with the creation of the Federal Reserve.
