I'm a white guy.
Mostly Irish/Scots. One of my grandfathers immigrated from Hungary in the 1920's, but I'm pretty much your standard-issue Caucasian.

The MSNBC program "Meeting David Wilson" has me blinking back tears.

My mom was born into a fairly wealthy family, well off enough that my mom was raised mostly by Ruby Maupin, a beautiful African-American woman employed by her family, while her mom lived the life of a country club wife of a doctor in Peoria, Illinois. I remember visiting her family's home in the mid 1960's, and meeting her brother Payton who worked in the Caterpillar factory on the banks of the Illinois river. My mom credits her character to Ruby. My debt to Ruby is direct.

Now I live in a city that is both a model of integration in parts, and a model of modern African-American despair and violence in other areas. My oldest son's first friend was black. My younger son's best friends are half black/half white, and half black/half Chinese.

Watching this history and seeing the threads of humanity brought together in an effort to discover understanding, and a path towards some kind of notion of reconciliation and justice, is powerful.

Hearing Obama extend his understanding of American politics to rural Americans, and defend it forcefully and with wisdom and clarity tonight, makes me think that maybe the time is right.

Maybe we can.

Yes, if we care enough to see it through, maybe we can.

Either your message was so eloquent it needed no reply or that any reply would seem awkward.

K&R.

8. Moving OP ... I wish I had cable TV right now....

My family emigrated here from Ireland in the late 1800's.

But we have a family member that signed the Declaration of Independence....

(long distance- not sure actually about that family tie)

My sons all have friends that are not white and so have I through out my life.

9. I didn't see that, darn.
If we met, bleever, you wouldn't see that my mom's side of the family is Latino. Or, that in reality, that her family embraced indigenous, black and Spanish DNA. My uncles would either pass or fail the pencil test, lol.

In my generation, there are about 25 cousins around the Bay Area. We've married Yankees, and Filipinos and beautiful lades from Oaxaca and our family dinners look like the UN General Assembly. I love that so much.

Maybe we can.

20. We can only disperse the seeping evil of servitude acting as a greater whole.
Edited on Fri Apr-11-08 10:53 PM by BushDespiser12
Obama, by exhibiting good leadership, can help to ignite the populace to work together in countering the divisiveness the upper 1% have perpetrated. The majority working in unison is the elite's worst nightmare. It will take a huge effort. It can and will be done... and there is no more pressing time, nor greater need, than now.

Maybe we can, together we will.
