CA - "was so bad an average of one inmate each week was dying of neglect or malpractice"
Governor Seeks $6 Billion to Improve California Prison Health Care
Written by Jason Kobely, Internet News Producer

SACRAMENTO (AP) -- Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is asking state lawmakers to authorize $6 billion for new prison hospitals.

The governor is working with a court-appointed federal receiver to ask legislators to approve bonds this year to pay for medical and mental health centers to house 10,000 inmates.

The state would spend $2.5 billion next year to build new medical facilities and $50 million to operate them under the plan. The rest of the money would be spent in future years.

If lawmakers refuse, the receiver could ask a federal judge to force the state to pay for the medical improvements.

The judge seized control of the state's prison health care system two years ago, saying medical care was so bad that an average of one inmate each week was dying of neglect or malpractice.

2. Free the drug war POWs! 35,000 drug offenders in CA prisons.
20% of California prisoners are doing time for drug offenses, according to the CDC:

And the real figure is undoubtedly higher, given California's proclivity for returning parolees to prison as violators because they had a dirty UA.

The drug war is a racket. Good for cops and prison guards, not so good for the rest of us.

3. I don't get it. 'We' are outraged about prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib yet, reports of US inmates

deaths moves no one?

BTW, many of these inmates are the 'freed' descendants of the slaves no one feels responsible for.

Descendants, who are used as a 'free' labor pool for corporate American. Inmates who build computer circuit board, build limousines, work for Victoria Secrets, build systems for the Department of Defense, etc. Inmates working in the factories behind barbed wire earns as little as little as .22 cents per hour.

For those who feel they are not responsible for the slaves of the past, do you feel responsible for these modern day slaves?
