Yahoo shot itself in the foot
Source: Personal opinion

This is not a news story

DU was given a big boost when Yahoo closed down its message boards. Yahoo once cornered the market on news blogging and ratings. It became a juggernaut of comments and replies, raging at times, some might say out of control, like a downhill train. It was a live wire on the pulse of a vibrant, vibrating country. It was the best and the worst, no fools were left out. Being called a 'moron' was sometimes a sign of courage and triumph. A place where bugs crawled through pecking beaks of predatory hawks. It was a battlefield of love and hate.

Maybe if Yahoo knew who they were and what they were doing, they would have never stopped the message boards. Yahoo shot itself in the foot with that change. All because the political pendulum was swinging away from the conservative movement when Herr Bush, uber boob, charged into the White House like a Panzer Division. Actung, "The public voice must to be silenced". And this was the end of the rude, noisy, sometimes violent expression of great joy and excitement. Which is by definition the meaning of the word Yahoo.

4. 98% of the posts were offensive, trollish, and worthless to a meaningful discussion.
I'm being generous when I say that only 2% of comments on Yahoo boards were of ANY value to a meaningful discussion.

5. I stopped using Yahoo news when they shut down the message boards.

Yes they were at times ugly and abusive, but it gave me a chance to refine my abilities. It gave me a chance to go head and head with the authoritarian right.

Car Talk used to have great message boards. Rant And Rave was where you could really cut loose. Some of the best running arguments I ever read were there.
