"How Old Mutual of You".."How Republican of You".. "How Elitist of You"
Edited on Mon Apr-14-08 11:46 AM by SoCalDem
Advertisers know how to create a catch-phrase..

Where's the beef?
2 all-beef patties...
Have it your way
I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids
Tastes great! Less filling
It keeps going and going and going

and many more..

A political campaign (or political movement) is an AD CAMPAIGN, designed & structured to bend the minds of the populace to "see things their way".

It's how "democratic" morphed into "democRAT".

It's how "liberal" morphed into "LIBRUL"

It's how "elite" became "ELITE"

The same people who roll the word "elite" off their forked tongues, with a gleeful sneer, also use that same term when they talk about their beloved ELITE Army Rangers or their ELITE S.W.A.T. teams of the police forces.. they call the Blue Angels an elite flying team.. They call Nascar drivers the elite drivers..and so on.

Definitions of elite:

* noun: a group or class of persons enjoying superior intellectual or social or economic status
* adjective: selected as the best

Example: "Elite colleges"

They are even LIBERAL in their usage of the coded words that mean one thing (usually a good thing), but they turn them into taunts against their opponents.

Are we to believe that John McCain is NOT an "elite"?
...His father was an ADMIRAL..he went to Annapolis...He's been in the senate for TWENTY-FOUR years..He's run for president TWICE..He's married to a millionairess..

HOW IS THAT NOT ELITIST?

Hillary Clinton was First Lady of Arkansas..She was First Lady of the United States..She's a sitting US Senator.. She had an Ivy League college education.. She's a millionairess

HOW IS THAT NOT ELITIST?

Barack Obama is probably the LEAST "elitist" of the candidates running.

He DID get an Ivy League education, but with the exception of the recent few years, he has NOT been on the national stage. He made most of his money from writing two books about his unusual life.,.(something that many ordinary people have done... a former stripper wrote an Academy Award-winning screenplay).
He was in state politics (also something that many ordinary people find themselves doing)

He WAS elevated to national prominance, but NOT because he was an "elite"..

He is a good public speaker and has some good ideas, so he rose up to prominance. Is it because he's black? perhaps..but does being an intellectual black person mean that he is "elite"?

Wasn't that the whole purpose of desegregation and Civil Rights?

Instead of criticizing politicians for being ELITE, we should be applauding them.. We have seen for seven and a half LONG years how dangerous is is to have a non-elite person in the Oval Office.

We need a concerted effort on our side to reclaim the meanings of "changed" words..."charged" words.

"How republican of you", is a common phrase that I have come to use.. I use it when someone I know does something selfish or stupid.

Republicans have ruined this country more than once, and it's about time that we start reminding people. Democrats have had their problems in office, to be sure, BUT I cannot think of any democrat who caused more lasting damage to our country than the least-destructive republican administration we have had.

Conservativism is NOT a virtuous philosophy. Just WHAT are they "conserving", other than THEIR money? They are not conserving the environment, the job-base, the economy, the health of the citizenry.

People roll phrases & words off their tongues, without even understanding what they are really saying. they do it because the media has "shorthanded" the phrases they want us to use..

Ask a "conservative" some questions.

Have them tell you, in real terms what conservatism is.
Listen to what they tell you. I'm betting that the things they tell you are just words picked out of republican talking points, and after they say the words, they have no idea what they mean..in real terms..

A conservative with no insurance and a sick child, will become an instant liberal. A conservative with a past-due mortgage and no job will become an instant liberal.

Conservative (the "today" meaning) means SELFISH

Don't get me wrong.. selfishness has its place..but in the PUBLIC sphere of things, selfishness is deadly.. PUBLIC SERVANTS (as they are all wont to call themselves) are about the GOOD OF ALL THE PEOPLE..not just the ones who write them checks at campaign time.

It's time for the spokespeople for democratic candidates to tackle this issue HEAD-ON (sorry couldn't resist). They need to start calling out the media. They all spend every second of air-time, reciting the day's talking points, when they SHOULD be using at least part of it to remind the viewers that the advertising-run media has a stake in seeing to it that we all buy into the spin, instead of the substance.

3. Ah.
Now we're arguing "of course he's elite but that's a GOOD thing." It's only bad when the term is used for Senator Clinton.

Got it.

6. Class divisions are a strictly tabboo subject in the elite media outlets.

How many times have you seen a panel of well-to-do political insiders sneering at someone for using "class warfare"? They're always referring to someone who's supporting labor, the middle class, or the poor. "Class warfare" is never used to describe the behavior of Bear Sterns, of course-- it only goes one way. Theirs is the ultimate elitist position; a way of dismissing the poor and the middle class out of hand.

I suspect this attempt to label Obama an elitist for bringing up the plight of the middle class may not work this time, however. Between the devalued dollar, the collapsing home market, etc., the middle class is nearly demolished, and they *are* pissed.
