Amazing. I believe people think this is a humor thread. |
|
When, in fact, it is using an ill-taught young girl's remark to denigrate both female athletes and female soldiers.
But you have a good laugh. Not all the blood spilled by women is menstrual.

Women are every bit as culpable as men for war. I suggest your daughter read some history. Were Cleopatra, Theodora, Isabella, Elizabeth I, Catherine the Great, Victoria, or Margaret Thatcher doves? Not to mention the support average women have always given to war, and the way they have glorified war "heroes," and the contempt they show for "cowards."
The only difference betwen men and women when it comes to war is that women have the brains to not fight in them, for the most part. They get stupid men to do it for them.

11. Sure there are instances, but historically speaking... |
|
men have done far more of the war-mongering in the world than women could even consider doing.
Men have done much in the way of glorification with medals, pilaging and all that. They think it's manly to fight and look down on the men who don't. It's men who think those who don't fight are cowards.
It's men, historically speaking, that prefer women to shut up, stay home and have their babies.
Yes, you have a few women, but ultimately it's the men.

13. But this thread isn't about war mongering. |
|
It's about the physical differences between men and women.
Which, HISTORICALLY SPEAKING, have been used as an excuse to deny equality to women.
But you keep pushing that good ol' "historical" line.

19. It's her belief and I see the point she was making... |
|
that if men could get pregnant and have babies that we wouldn't have the amount of war and killing that we have today. She thinks that women having babies makes us better, more compassionate and more willing to help others. It's the carrying of a life inside you that she believes makes women far more unwilling to wage war and kill.
I understand what she's saying and some of it I agree with, but her and I both differ on what life means in regards to pregancy.

And if you look at the percentage of male leaders vs. female leaders that have started wars then I think the women may be more culpable, but hey who's counting.

You'll notice the words percentage in my post. Of course men have done more "war-mongering" in terms of sheer numbers, they have been in power what probably 95% of the time, at a minimum. The statement was that by percentage the women had done more "war-mongering". I would appreciate an answer to the question also.

This teenager's parents are vets. Her Dad was sent to fight in the first gulf war.
She remembers it was primarily men who did the war-mongering in the lead up to war. She's read up on McCain, bush and the rest of the neocons who want more war. That's what she reacted to and I can't say as I blame her.
Most women aren't war-mongers and that's why she said it.

22. I wonder if we could suppress testosterone |
|
whether it would cut down on the murder rate and on wars. I'm not sure. It seems like a lot of German women were wildly supportive of Hitler during the Third Reich. And there are several examples of Russian female units during World War I and World War II fighting at the front and being as courageous as men in combat. Maria Botchkareva commanding the all-female Battalion of Death would attack the German lines when the male units were afraid to leave their trenches. Let's say one country developed a weapon that virtually neutered every man in another country and brought their testosterone levels way down. Someone would have to step up to the plate for self-defense and become very aggressive, just to survive against an invasion. Maybe the women would become Amazon warriors. Women are capable of being very aggressive in self-defense and when protecting their young. I don't think women would be as ready to fight wars of aggression, but defensive struggles might be another thing.
Maybe in the distant future, we'll see a classless society emerge, with not only a homogenized single race but no separate sexes and we'll become unisex, with reproduction through cloning. And we'll be able to get the same or even far greater and much more intense pleasure as physical sex through direct and artificial stimulation of certain parts of the brain, with virtual reality programs that let the subject enjoy unlimited types of sexual fantasies as both man or woman or shades in between.

31. I used to think that too |
|
But some of the wingnut women I've seen in the past 20 years have made me understand that members of my gender are no more compassionate than the Y chromosome types!
Okay, so maybe we're not picking up guns and committing violent acts at the rate men are, but we're catching up! Look at that heinous beating those teenage girls purported to get on YouTube. Years ago, we would have been shocked to see behaviour like that from girls. Men were the sociopathic serial killers, not us.
Not to mention those horrible women on Faux, the Ann Coulters, Laura Ingrahams, Laura Schlessingers et al. They're right up there with Hannity, Savage and O'Reilly!

Sometimes, I think some who're marginalized in one way or another might try to imitate mainstream behaviour to seek social approval...
But if one digs deeper, men's and women's motivation is totally different. I mean, there are women serial killers, but they aren't Ted Bundy: They kill for money or material goods, not for a sexual thrill. A woman in Sacramento had a boarding house, and the police dug up at least 15 bodies in her backyard--boarders she had killed to collect their pension and social security checks!! But there was no torture or other violence done to the victims.
So maybe a woman who picks up a gun or beats someone up is more calculating than a testosterone driven man who does the same in the heat of the moment.
All I do know is that a woman in power totally has the capacity to wage war. Someone mentioned Thatcher--remember the Faulklands? That was her answer to Reagan's Greneda faux war, stirring up the jingoism and false patriotism. She's right up there with any man on that front!
