Tesco accused over padded bra for 7-year-olds
By Gary Cleland
Last Updated: 1:56pm BST 14/04/2008

Supermarket giant Tesco has been heavily criticised for selling a padded plunge bra aimed at girls as young as seven.

The bra, which costs £4, is sold alongside vests in the supermarket's seven to eight-year-old age range.

It is the latest embarrassment for Tesco, which in 2006 removed a pole dancing kit from sale after being accused of "destroying children's innocence".

Yesterday teachers and children's groups criticised the decision to sell the bra.

A spokesman for the children's charity the NSPCC said: "It is important that products accessible to children are appropriate to their age and understanding."

2. My granddaughter, nearing 10 years old, has asked her mother for a bra.
She is a little heavier than her skinny sisters and has become self conscious of her budding figure. But her bra is not padded. It is more like a replacement of an undershirt and merely smoothes out her bustline.

These things can be handled without over sexualizing the little girls involved. It's really a matter of sensitivity to the young girls' feelings...

3. How many 7-year-old girls have anything to "lift and separate?"
This reminds me of Abercrombie & Fitch mulling the idea of thong panties for adolescents. Like those girls don't have enough insecurities already without their underwear pressuring them to tone up, starve themselves, and look "just so" to gain the approval of their peers.
