Saudi arms investigation reinstated by UK High Court

Lord Peter Goldsmith, who was Britain's attorney general when the government dropped an investigation into alleged corruption in a Saudi Arabia arms deal, has defended the decision.

The Serious Fraud Office abandoned the probe into a 1985 deal between arms maker BAE Systems and Saudi Arabia, worth US$85 billion.

The case was dropped when then prime minister, Tony Blair, said intelligence links with Saudi Arabia could be threatened in the 'war on terror'.

Goldsmith told Sky News that 'in the real world, the risks to national security, the risks from a withdrawal of Saudi Arabian cooperation in relation to intelligence and terrorism prevention, would have been very, very serious.”
