Jenna Bush Talks About Her Wedding Plans
For those not among the 200 friends and family members invited to the Crawford, Texas, ranch for next month's wedding of first daughter Jenna Bush to fiancé Henry Hager, the bride-to-be is providing a brief preview.

"I was raised in Texas and it just felt right," Bush, 26, said of holding the festivities in the Lone Star State rather than the White House, according to The Washington Post, citing the upcoming issue of Vogue.

"It means a lot to Henry and me to be outdoors," she's quoted as saying. "We wanted something organic and low key."

Bush does say that the Executive Mansion initially was a consideration. But then, "That's not really my personality. There's a glamour to it, I know, but Henry and I are far less glamorous than the White House."

Given Texas temps that time of year, the May 10 event will not commence until 7:30 p.m. – after the sun goes down. Dinner and dancing underneath a tent are to follow.

The bride's twin sister, Barbara, will serve as maid of honor and the single bridesmaid.

The Wedding Dress
Also on hand: 14 attendants, to be dressed in short chiffon green, blue, yellow and lavender dresses by native Texas designer Lela Rose, whose wedding collection, launched in fall 2006, is described on her Web site as "a pairing of unconventional fabrics and techniques that are trademarks of the designer."

More traditional is the choice of designer for the bridal gown itself: Oscar de la Renta, who been a favorite of presidential wives for several administrations. This may explain why President Bush joked last month: "I had to face some very difficult spending decisions and I've had to conduct sensitive diplomacy. That's called planning for a wedding."

Laura Bush wore a de la Renta gown at the 2005 inaugural ball, as well as other creations by him for various formal occasions, and she and Jenna were seen visiting the New York designer's showroom in February.

But the so-described "major traditionalist" in the group appears to be groom-to-be Hager – who reportedly plans to adhere to superstition and not gaze upon his future wife's dress (not even in sketches or photos) until she meets him at the altar.

I am glad Daddy can give her a nice big wedding while thousands of parents mourn the death of children sacrificed in vain.

2. I wish her all the best. Every girl should have a great
wedding. I had a fairly good sized wedding and I'll never regret it. Only we were poor and had to pay for it ourselves, our folks on both sides had no money. So we worked five jobs between us to pay for it and it was worth every penny. I still love looking at those pictures from thirty years ago when we were really just kids.

35. Weddings are a huge waste of money.

If you can afford one, whatever. I can think of about a zillion better uses for the money.

However, when you see families going into debt for a party, it is just ridiculous.

Hell, how about just starting your life together debt-free?

You are right. There are much better uses for the money. My wife & I got married for $500. That was 13 years ago. My cousin, who got married the year before us and spent $40k, was divorced within 5 years.

We WANTED a church wedding and were willing to bust our butts to get it and I've never regretted it. It was the happiest day of my life.

14. Yup. It's Pierce Mallon Bush. W's brave nephew serving in Iraq.
Just kidding!!!

Actually, like many Young Republicans, he nobly defends his uncle's war from the confines of his local country club.

He actually did speak out for the war a couple years ago, but I guess he wasn't considered an ideal spokesman (check the pic), and was hustled off stage. "Pierce Mallon." What a name.

in his frat boy days. When he was on the Today Show he was moaning about the fact that he had to wake up at 6am and said he couldn't believe people actually did it (aka, that people WORK!). And all but said he was out drinking all night.

Watch out for him in another 30-40 years when they think people will have forgotten about his uncle! :scared:

Not Barb wants something "organic and low key" so she's having Barb as her maid of honor and the "single" bridesmaid?"

Of course she's going to have 14 "attendants." What the hell is the difference between a "bridesmaid" and an "attendant?"

28. I think "maids" are single and "attendants" are married
In the Olden Days (no, not when Clinton was in office, but before that), "maid" meant "virgin." In this case, "maid" probably just means "single." Whatever works.

Essentially, Jenna's wedding party is twenty people: Jenna, her sister, these other fifteen attendants, plus ring bearer, flower girl and miniature bride. The last three Army platoons I was in didn't have that many people.

32. Plus the groom's ringbearer...
Not sure if grooms have flower boys and miniature grooms in Organized Crime Family weddings, but the last time I saw a Really Obnoxious Wedding in the paper, they had two ringbearers, flower girl, miniature bride, little kid at the guestbook...probably ten children taking part in the ceremony. And no, they WEREN'T children of the bride, you pevs, because the bride was 19.

And don't forget all the people on the periphery--the ones who don't walk down the aisle. Oh my, we're probably talking about a hundred people total, none of whom should be at large right now.

I'm confused. I've never heard of a "miniature bride." My daughter's flower girl was not dressed up as a miniature bride. The thought of it is ghastly.

36. Two different children
In your more expensive Southern weddings, they will take a child--preferably the bride's littlest sister, but it's always someone under the age of six--dress her as an exact replica of the bride, and send her down the aisle at the head of the procession supposedly so everyone can dote on how precious she is.

And by "exact replica" I mean EXACT replica. I became aware of this horrific custom when I photographed a wedding for the receptionist at a company I used to work for. They bought a 6yo-size version of the wedding dress, which probably set them back $2500. (Yes, a $2500 dress for a six-year-old.) They styled her hair identically to the bride's. They put as close to identical makeup on her as they could get the kid to sit still for. They even spritzed her with the bride's perfume. Then they sent the poor thing out to the altar...she ran straight to her mother. I can't say I blamed her.
